Bluesky Introduces Blue Checkmark Verification System

Bluesky is making waves by officially introducing its own version of the blue check verification system. This feature aims to bring a new level of trust and authenticity to the platform, reminiscent of Twitter’s original blue check system. With this new verification, Bluesky is set to make it easier for users to identify and trust accounts for their legitimacy.

In this initial rollout, Bluesky is partnering with a few select “Trusted Verifiers”—independent organizations that have the authority to authenticate accounts as part of their team. For instance, a company could give the blue check to its public relations staff, ensuring users that these individuals are credible sources for company updates.

To achieve this, Bluesky’s moderation team will meticulously verify each account to guarantee their authenticity, adding another layer of security.

Previously, Bluesky users could set a domain they owned as their username to establish authenticity. For example, an account linked with a reputable domain is a sure sign of its legitimacy, making it difficult for impostors to mimic.

This new verification step is particularly advantageous for public figures such as celebrities, journalists, and politicians, helping reduce potential misinformation from impostors. Impressively, over 270,000 users have already associated their Bluesky usernames with a verified website.

The introduction of the blue check was driven by user feedback, highlighting the need for a more apparent signal of authenticity on the platform. Bluesky recognizes the importance of domain handles but sees the blue check as a valuable addition for its community.

As of now, Bluesky isn’t yet accepting verification applications from the public, but it has plans to introduce a request form soon, paving the way for broader access to this verification feature.
