Google’s rapid push into artificial intelligence has defined much of this year, but the race to scale tools like Gemini and AI Overviews is coming with internal friction. While many tech companies have reshaped their workforces to prioritize AI, Google appears to be taking a different route by cutting hundreds of AI support roles amid rising tensions over labor rights and working conditions.
According to a recent report, more than 200 contractors who helped build and refine Google’s AI products were laid off in August without prior notice. Hired through outsourcing firms, these workers played a crucial part in training and evaluating systems behind Gemini and AI Overviews. Their daily tasks reportedly included analyzing model outputs, rewriting responses, rating content quality, and delivering feedback to improve accuracy and safety—work that directly influences how these AI tools perform for users.
Despite the importance of these roles, workers described pay gaps and inconsistent benefits. “Super rater” staff hired via GlobalLogic were said to earn $28 to $32 per hour, while other contractors performing similar duties earned between $18 and $22. Many also reported limited job security and minimal access to benefits beyond basic compensation.
Tensions reportedly escalated as workers voiced frustration and considered unionization. Some say they were warned about discussing workplace conditions on social platforms. Soon after, abrupt terminations began. When questioned, at least one worker said the explanation given referenced “ramping down a project.” Others described being assigned unrealistic tasks and targets that heightened stress.
Google has indicated that contractors and subcontractors are responsible for day-to-day working conditions. Even so, multiple workers contend that existing policies have done little to address their experiences. The situation underscores a broader challenge across the AI industry: despite advances in automation, AI development still relies heavily on human labor to test, tune, and moderate systems—work that is often undervalued or overlooked.
As AI becomes more embedded in products and services, the debate over fair pay, transparency, and humane working conditions is likely to intensify. These layoffs highlight a difficult truth for the industry: building smarter machines still depends on the people behind them.
