Ayaneo teases Code R (Code R-1), a retro-styled entry-level gaming handheld
Ayaneo is expanding its portable gaming lineup with a new entry-level family, and the first device out of the gate is the Code R, also referred to as the Code R-1. While the company is also juggling projects like the dual-screen Pocket DS, the fitness-focused Pocket Fit and Pocket Fit Elite under the Konkr banner, and the vertical Pocket Vert, the Code R signals a different direction: a budget-friendly handheld with a nostalgic twist.
Positioned as the first model in Ayaneo’s new entry-level lineup, Code R isn’t part of Konkr. Where Konkr aims to deliver higher performance at aggressive prices, Code R is being built from the ground up as a more affordable, streamlined device for casual play and retro gaming.
Ayaneo has revealed a design outline that highlights a 4:3 display, a classic aspect ratio favored for retro titles. The company also clarified that the screen won’t be the same as the secondary display on the Pocket DS and will measure under 5 inches. The silhouette shows subtly inward-curving grips and a pair of shoulder buttons for familiar handheld ergonomics. That 4:3 layout puts the Code R in the same general camp as compact retro handhelds like the Anbernic RG477M or the Retroid Pocket Mini V2, with an emphasis on portability and old-school compatibility.
Early chatter suggests pricing could land around 150 to 200 dollars, positioning it above ultra-cheap options like the Mangmi Air X but still well under flagship-class handhelds. Exact specifications, chipset, operating system, battery capacity, and launch timing haven’t been disclosed yet.
Ayaneo is known for sharing details in stages, so expect a slow build of teasers as the Code R gets closer to release. If you’re looking for an approachable retro handheld with a clean design, compact 4:3 screen, and a wallet-friendly price, the Code R is shaping up to be one to watch.
