The audio market continues to flourish as Indian company Pocket FM announces a massive $103 million injection through Series D funding, a strategic move spearheaded by Lightspeed Ventures with notable contributions from Stepstone Group. The platform, with a robust backing from giants like Tencent and Times Internet, is charting a course for expansion beyond its current frontiers, eyeing lucrative opportunities in the European and Latin American markets following its promising incursion into the US.
Now boasting $196 million from funding efforts, Pocket FM’s valuation has surged to an impressive $750 million. The platform’s quest for capital has been an ongoing narrative, with plans for this specific financing round revealed in prior discussions with Lightspeed.
Understanding Pocket FM’s Model
Building its reputation as the “Netflix for audio,” Pocket FM curates audio series comprising bite-sized episodes for user consumption. The platform operates on a unique model where listeners can access certain content at no cost, while other segments require the purchase of coins—a departure from the standard subscription model prevailing in today’s content marketplaces. This model fosters a more flexible user experience, aligning with the spending patterns of game-like microtransactions.
Investments and Strategic Ventures
With a firm foothold in the audio space, Pocket FM has recently pledged a substantial $40 million into pocket Novel, its story-publishing segment reminiscent of Wattpad. The move follows a surge in writer registration, topping 90,000 since February. Similar to its audio platform, Pocket Novel leverages a coin mechanism, encouraging users to invest in unlocking content. However, coin integration across both platforms has not been implemented, restricting the use of coins to their respective apps.
Pocket FM also dabbles in the audiobook segment in India, competing with platforms such as Audible by employing a similar content unlocking strategy through a partnered approach.
User Engagement and Revenue Growth
More than just compiling extensive audio content, Pocket FM aims to maximize user engagement. With over 100,000 hours of content and 400,000 episodes in various genres and languages, the platform has seen an ARR of $150 million, heavily influenced by its success in the US market, which contributes $100 million of that total.
The company’s U.S. user base has demonstrated impressive engagement, surpassing global averages with 135 minutes of platform usage. Meanwhile, Pocket Novel aims to reach a $100 million ARR by 2025, creating a competitive edge against other domestic platforms like Pratilipi.
Embracing Generative AI and the Creative Economy
Pocket FM acknowledges the potential of generative AI and is piloting features that could translate text into audiobooks, collaborating with Eleven Labs to offer writers a selection of 50 AI voices. Their emphasis is on utilizing AI to enhance creator productivity, though there is an acknowledgment that filtering is necessary to maintain content quality.
Writers on Pocket FM benefit from a revenue share model, with top earners reportedly making over $3,000 monthly. While the platform refrains from enforcing exclusive rights upon creator onboarding, it has laid down arrangements that secure intellectual property ownership.
Future Outlook and Expansion
As the company continues to scale, the buzz of investor interest grows, with the Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund ADIA reportedly in talks for further funding. While the company sidesteps the topic, it confirms substantial investor intrigue.
The company’s co-founder, Nayak, clarifies that despite the absence of immediate profitability, the focus remains on scaling with a solid gross margin in sight. As for human capital, Pocket FM envisions a global team expansion, with anticipated recruitment of 500 new members to join its current 800-person roster.
With its sights set on new markets and bolstering its platform, Pocket FM’s story is one of a company on the move, ready to bring the world of audio content to new highs.
