Audible Unveils Budget-Friendly “Standard” Plan to Take on Spotify

Audible is introducing a new, lower-priced way to listen, rolling out a “Standard” subscription plan for $8.99 per month. That’s a significant drop from Audible’s existing Premium plan, which costs $14.95 monthly, and it’s designed to appeal to people who enjoy audiobooks but don’t necessarily finish multiple titles every month.

With the Audible Standard plan, members get one audiobook per month from Audible’s catalog, plus unlimited listening from a curated included library featuring a selection of Audible Originals. It also comes with access to nearly 200 popular titles that have been available through Wondery+, a service that’s expected to shut down in the coming months—making Standard a potentially convenient landing spot for listeners who want to keep enjoying those picks.

There is a key trade-off, though. Under the Standard plan, you won’t keep the audiobooks you’ve listened to if you cancel your subscription. By contrast, Audible’s Premium plan allows members to retain the audiobooks they’ve redeemed even after unsubscribing. For value-focused listeners who mainly want monthly listening without building a permanent library, Standard could be an attractive option. For those who care about keeping titles long-term, Premium may still make more sense.

The new Audible Standard subscription is launching across several major markets: the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, and France. Audible also says it’s testing the plan in additional regions, signaling that a wider rollout could follow if results remain strong.

This move comes at a time when competition in the audiobook subscription space is heating up, especially as more platforms push audiobooks alongside other audio content. Audible is positioning Standard as a way to bring in “lighter listeners” while helping publishers and creators reach broader audiences. According to the company, early testing has been promising—trials in the UK and Australia reportedly delivered a double-digit increase in new sign-ups compared with previous offerings, along with strong acquisition and retention.

With the broader expansion now underway, Audible expects the Standard plan to attract millions of new customers, giving audiobook listeners a cheaper monthly option while reshaping how people choose between owning titles and simply having access to them.
