In the realm of cutting-edge computing technology, whispers about AMD’s future innovations are always a cause for excitement. Recently, a tantalizing possibility emerged from the depths of an ASUS WRX90 motherboard, sparking curiosity and speculation about what AMD might have up its sleeve for their next-generation Threadripper series.
The ASUS Pro WS WRX90E-SAGE SE motherboard has been spotted with an intriguing, albeit currently non-functional, setting. This option allows users to toggle the 3D V-Cache feature, but it remains unused for the current Threadripper 7000WX and 7000X CPUs. Designed specifically for AMD’s powerhouse Threadripper series, these motherboards are tailored for high-performance workstations rather than enterprise servers like EPYC.
Interestingly, the WRX90 chipset does not officially support EPYC CPUs, such as the Genoa processors, which come with the flashy 3D V-Cache based on Zen4 architecture. This presents a curious case as the existing motherboards are not equipped to handle the EPYC models, which brings into question why the 3D V-Cache option exists at all.
Presently, the Threadripper 7000 series is available in configurations with either 12 or 8 Core Complex Dies (CCDs), each featuring 8 Zen4 cores. While EPYC Genoa-X offers a tantalizing 12 stacks of X3D cache delivering a whopping 768MB of additional L3 cache, it does not have a variant with just four stacks. This peculiarity leaves room for speculation as the only known product sporting four stacks of Zen4 cores, named Sienna, is designed for edge systems and telecommunications rather than the workstation segment.
The presence of this tantalizing 3D V-Cache toggle could hint at potential future capabilities, implying that AMD’s future Threadripper 9000WX or 9000X series might indeed support 3D V-Cache. This would allow for even greater performance enhancements for those who rely on Threadripper’s powerful processing capabilities. However, it’s essential to note that this could merely be a latent feature that might not manifest in any upcoming product releases.
