Astronaut Detects Mysterious Sonar-esque Sound from Docked Boeing Starliner at ISS

The Boeing Starliner, designed by the American aerospace juggernaut, is under the spotlight yet again. Initially developed under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program to ferry astronauts to and from the International Space Station (ISS), the Starliner has encountered its fair share of troubles. Its June 5 launch was marred by delays due to complications with the rocket and service module. Now, it’s back in the news for an entirely different reason.

On August 31, NASA astronaut Butch Wilmore, aboard the ISS, reported hearing an odd sonar-like pulsing sound emanating from the Starliner, which has been docked to the station for nearly three months. This sound was strange enough to prompt Wilmore to reach out to NASA’s Mission Control in Houston. They confirmed the noise, which was audible when Wilmore held his microphone to the Starliner’s speaker.

The source of this mysterious sound remains uncertain, though speculation points towards common space issues, such as structural deformations or electromagnetic interference. This incident is reminiscent of the “space music” described by Apollo 10 astronauts in 1969, which turned out to be interference with their VHF radios.

The timing couldn’t be more challenging for Boeing, given the series of issues that have plagued the Starliner, including helium leaks and failing thrusters during its initial crewed flight. Consequently, NASA has opted to bring the Starliner back to Earth autonomously on September 6, leaving astronaut Wilmore and his colleague Sunita Williams to return on a Crew Dragon spacecraft next February.

Despite its struggles, the Boeing Starliner stands as a critical component in NASA’s ambitious goals for space exploration. Representing a partnership with the private sector, it aims to provide a reliable means of transporting astronauts, an endeavor shared with SpaceX’s Crew Dragon. For now, though, the Starliner’s journey continues to be a bumpy one.
