Arc Browser’s Future: Sale or Open Source as Focus Shifts to AI

The Browser Company recently announced plans to focus on developing a new AI-powered browser called Dia, while considering options for its current Arc Browser, including selling or possibly open-sourcing it.

When Dia was revealed in December 2024, the company recognized that Arc, though innovative, posed challenges for many users due to its complexity. Since then, Arc has been maintained with necessary updates but without new features or developments.

The company’s CEO, Josh Miller, addressed the hurdles faced by Arc, describing it as encountering a “novelty tax.” He noted that while Arc’s uniqueness was part of its allure, it also led to steep learning curves with little perceived reward for many users. The browser’s lack of cohesion in core features and values further complicated its user experience.

While The Browser Company has not decided to shut down Arc entirely, they are exploring options such as selling or open-sourcing it. However, Miller pointed out the difficulty in open-sourcing because Arc was built using the Arc Development Kit (ADK), an internal SDK that is also central to Dia. Giving away this intellectual property is not currently viable for the company, though Miller didn’t dismiss the idea completely for the future.

There is notable interest from Arc users for the browser to become an open-source project, adding another layer to the company’s decision-making process.

Meanwhile, Dia is still in alpha testing stages. While a release date has yet to be announced, it is expected that Arc members will have early access to test the new browser.
