Apple’s next Mac Mini could arrive within days, and it may bring a bigger chip upgrade than expected
Apple may be preparing to reveal a refreshed Mac Mini very soon, potentially launching the compact desktop before its major September iPhone event. For fans of small but powerful desktop computers, this could be one of Apple’s most interesting hardware updates of the year.
The upcoming Mac Mini has reportedly been tested with both M5 and M6-generation Apple silicon, leaving some uncertainty about which chip will make it into the final product. Apple has skipped chip generations on the Mac Mini before, so an M6 model is not out of the question. If that happens, the new Mac Mini could deliver a more meaningful performance jump than a typical yearly refresh.
The current Mac Mini was introduced in October 2024 with M4 and M4 Pro chips. That version also brought a major design change, shrinking the desktop into a much smaller chassis while keeping the performance focus that has made the Mac Mini popular among creators, developers, students, and home office users.
Since the Mac Mini has not been updated in nearly two years, Apple has room to make this next version feel like a major upgrade. An M5-powered Mac Mini would still be a strong option, especially if Apple wants to keep pricing competitive. However, an M6 version would be more exciting, particularly because the M6 generation is expected to play a key role in Apple’s next wave of Mac performance improvements.
The M6 chip is rumored to be one of Apple’s first Mac processors built using TSMC’s advanced N2 manufacturing process. If accurate, that could mean better performance, improved power efficiency, and stronger thermal behavior in a compact desktop design. For a small machine like the Mac Mini, those gains could matter a lot, especially for users who rely on it for video editing, coding, music production, multitasking, or light creative workloads.
Apple is also believed to be working on a new 24-inch iMac with an M6 chip, expected before the end of 2026. That model may skip the M5 generation entirely, similar to what could happen with the Mac Mini. The current iMac also arrived in October 2024 with the M4 chip, so Apple appears to be preparing a broader refresh for its desktop lineup.
Alongside the Mac Mini rumors, Apple’s next iPad mini is also expected to launch this autumn, possibly before the end of October. The biggest upgrade could be its display. The new iPad mini is reportedly set to feature an OLED screen, which would be a first for Apple’s smallest tablet.
An OLED iPad mini would likely offer deeper blacks, richer colors, better contrast, and a more premium viewing experience. That could make the compact tablet more appealing for reading, streaming, gaming, note-taking, and creative work on the go.
The chip inside the next iPad mini remains uncertain. Apple could choose the M5 to control costs, especially since OLED panels are more expensive than traditional LCD screens. However, an M6 chip is still possible if Apple wants the device to feel more future-ready and align it with its upcoming silicon roadmap.
If these launches happen as expected, Apple’s fall hardware season could be more than just new iPhones. A new Mac Mini with M5 or M6 power, a future M6 iMac, and an OLED iPad mini would give Apple several strong products across its desktop and tablet lineup.
For now, the biggest question is whether Apple will use the Mac Mini as an early showcase for its next-generation M6 chip or keep things more affordable with an M5 version. Either way, the next Mac Mini is shaping up to be an important update for anyone looking for a compact, efficient, and powerful Apple desktop.
