Apple may finally be ready to bring touch input to the MacBook, and the long-rumored upgrade could arrive earlier than many expected. According to recent reporting from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s first touchscreen MacBook Pro is now expected to launch with the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, rather than waiting for the later M7 generation.

The upcoming models are said to include both 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro versions, with a possible release window between late 2026 and early 2027. If accurate, this would mark one of the biggest changes to the MacBook Pro lineup in years, combining a new display technology, a redesigned body, and a major shift in how users interact with macOS.

For years, Apple resisted adding touchscreens to its Mac laptops, even as Windows laptops widely adopted the feature. The company instead pushed the iPad as its touch-first computing device while keeping the Mac focused on keyboard, trackpad, and mouse input. That approach now appears to be changing.

The biggest surprise is the chip strategy. Earlier expectations suggested that Apple might save its touchscreen MacBook Pro for the M7 era. However, the latest report claims Apple has moved the project forward, pairing the new design with the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips instead.

This is especially interesting because Apple is also rumored to be skipping M6 Pro and M6 Max chips for its high-end MacBook Pro lineup. If that happens, the company could move directly from M5 Pro and M5 Max to M7 Pro and M7 Max later on, making the M5-powered touchscreen MacBook Pro a major transitional release.

The new MacBook Pro is expected to offer more than just a touch-enabled screen. Apple is reportedly planning to bring an OLED display to the laptop, which would be a major upgrade over the current mini-LED panels. OLED technology could deliver deeper blacks, stronger contrast, improved power efficiency in certain situations, and a more premium viewing experience overall.

Another major design change could be the arrival of Dynamic Island on the MacBook Pro. First introduced on the iPhone 14 Pro, Dynamic Island replaced the traditional notch with a pill-shaped interactive area that can show alerts, background activity, timers, music controls, calls, and other live information.

On a MacBook, Dynamic Island could potentially serve a similar purpose, giving users quick access to system alerts, app activity, FaceTime controls, media playback, and other useful shortcuts. If Apple implements it well, it could make the MacBook display feel more modern while reducing the visual impact of the current notch.

The redesigned chassis is also expected to be part of the update. While details remain limited, a new body could mean thinner bezels, a slimmer profile, updated ports, or a refined keyboard and trackpad experience. Apple typically reserves major physical redesigns for important product cycles, and the addition of a touchscreen would certainly qualify.

Looking beyond the M5 Pro and M5 Max models, Apple is already said to be testing M7 versions of the touchscreen MacBook Pro. These models could arrive by the end of 2027, following the introduction of the standard M7 chip earlier that year. The more powerful M7 Pro and M7 Max variants are expected to come later, while an M7 Ultra chip may follow in 2028.

If the timeline proves accurate, Apple’s MacBook Pro roadmap could become unusually busy over the next few years. The company may first introduce the M5 Pro and M5 Max touchscreen MacBook Pro in late 2026 or early 2027, then follow with M7-based versions not long after.

For Apple users, the bigger question is how macOS will adapt to touch. A touchscreen MacBook Pro would likely require interface adjustments, larger touch targets in certain areas, and better support for gestures. Apple will need to balance touch functionality without making macOS feel like iPadOS or compromising the precision that Mac users expect.
