Apple executive Dan Riccio retiring later this month

Apple Vision Pro Lead Dan Riccio to Retire After Over 25 Years of Service

Dan Riccio, a long-standing Apple executive, is set to retire, marking the end of a remarkable 26-year journey with the tech giant. Riccio is notably recognized for his pivotal role in developing the $3,499 Apple Vision Pro, working directly under CEO Tim Cook as an engineering executive.

As Riccio steps down, John Ternus is poised to take the reins on the groundbreaking Apple Vision Pro project. Ternus’s new role comes as Apple prepares to unveil a more cost-effective version of its innovative headset, anticipated to debut next year.

Riccio’s career with Apple began in 1998, starting as a product design director. Four years later, in August 2012, he rose to Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, a position he held for over eight years. Eventually, he embarked on a top-secret project in 2021, which came to life as the Apple Vision Pro.

Speculation may arise about potential challenges Apple could face without Riccio regarding future mixed-reality headsets and smart glasses. However, John Ternus’s succession as Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering signals Apple’s commitment to advancing its Vision Pro line, including plans for an affordable version by 2025.

In this transition, Mike Rockwell, who reported to Riccio, will now work under Ternus. Rockwell will manage the day-to-day operations of the Apple Vision Pro and other cutting-edge products. While Riccio leaves behind a legacy of innovation, including the mixed-reality headset, he also faced hurdles, such as the scrapped self-driving car project known as ‘Project Titan,’ which was dropped due to financial concerns.
