Apple Sports Revamps for Football Season: Introducing Live Activities and Play-by-Play Enhancements

In anticipation of the NFL and college football seasons, Apple has introduced several exciting updates to its sports-focused app. These updates include Live Activities for all leagues, a new “dynamic drive tracker” for visualizing ball position on the field, and support for football game play-by-play.

Apple Sports, launched in February, is a free iOS app tailored for sports enthusiasts. It offers real-time updates, scores, and comprehensive statistics for the 15 most popular leagues, including NCAA basketball, MLS, MLB, NBA, WNBA, NHL, Premier League, and more.

Recently, Apple added support for NFL and college football just ahead of their seasons.

One of the standout features is Live Activities, set to debut with iOS 18 and watchOS 11 this fall. Live Activities enable users to glance at live scores on their lock screens while keeping up with play-by-play updates. Currently, fans can access Live Activities for games via the Apple TV app, but with iOS 18, this feature will transition to the Sports app.

The dynamic drive tracker is another valuable addition, allowing football fans to track the ball’s position on the field in real-time. NFL and college football fans will also benefit from live updating betting odds throughout the game.

Apple has also enhanced the live play-by-play feature to make it easier for football fans to follow the action. This improvement includes a filtered view designed to emphasize scoring drives, ensuring fans don’t miss critical moments.

Moreover, the Sports app will receive further updates later this year, introducing a new drop-down navigation for main scorecard views and improved search functionality. Apple has also announced that additional leagues will be added soon, beginning with the Champions League and Europa League during the league phase in September.

The Apple Sports app is available in the U.S., the U.K., and Canada.
