Apple has introduced a game-changing update with the launch of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, highlighting official support for wired Xbox Controllers. This new feature opens up a fresh and exciting avenue for gamers, enabling a smooth transition to low-latency gaming with wired controllers on Apple devices.
With the latest software upgrades, owners of wired Xbox Controllers can now effortlessly connect and play by simply plugging their controllers into iPhones, iPads, or Macs. Historically, Apple has offered native support for console controllers, although it sometimes required a bit of patience, illustrated by the Xbox Elite 2 Controller, which took a year for support integration.
Adding wired Xbox Controller support is particularly noteworthy because of the unique technological challenges it posed. Unlike other controllers that utilize the USB-HID standard, Xbox Controllers operate on a custom USB protocol known as GIP. This required Apple to collaborate closely with Microsoft/Xbox to ensure seamless compatibility, which they have now achieved.
For those eager to dive into new gaming experiences, connecting a wired Xbox Controller is straightforward. Devices equipped with a USB-C port can connect directly via a USB-C to USB-C cable. For older models like the iPhone 14, which feature a Lightning port, a Lightning to USB-C adapter will be necessary to establish the connection.
This development not only enhances the gaming versatility and experience on Apple devices but also strengthens the bridge between major tech ecosystems—providing gamers with more options to enjoy their favorite titles.
