Apple is facing a class-action lawsuit after several popular Apple Watch models were left out of the upcoming watchOS 27 update, raising fresh questions about software support, product lifespan, and transparency for smartwatch buyers.

The update, expected to arrive this fall, will reportedly be available only for the Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch Ultra 2, Apple Watch SE 3, and newer models. That means the Apple Watch Series 8, original Apple Watch Ultra, and Apple Watch SE 2 will not receive watchOS 27.

The decision has drawn attention because some of the affected devices are relatively recent. The Apple Watch Ultra and Apple Watch SE 2 were released in 2022, and the Apple Watch SE 2 was still being sold directly through Apple’s retail channels as recently as September 2025. For many users, the loss of major software updates so soon after purchase feels unexpected.

The controversy centers on Apple’s update policy for the Apple Watch. With watchOS 26, Apple still supported models going back to the Apple Watch Series 6. The move to watchOS 27 appears to significantly narrow the list of compatible devices, cutting off multiple watches that many owners may have expected to remain supported for longer.

Although the affected Apple Watch models will continue to function, the lack of future operating system updates could reduce their usefulness over time. New features will not arrive, security improvements may become limited, and app developers may eventually stop supporting older watchOS versions. As a result, owners could find that their smartwatch becomes less capable even if the hardware itself still works properly.

The lawsuit was filed by Apple Watch owner Richard Goetz, who purchased an Apple Watch Ultra for $799 in December 2022. According to the complaint, he argues that he would not have bought the device at that price if Apple had clearly disclosed that major software support could end after only around three years.

The case claims that Apple effectively controls the practical lifespan of the Apple Watch through software updates. Even if the hardware remains powerful enough for daily use, the lawsuit argues that ending operating system support can limit functionality and reduce the long-term value of the device.

A key issue raised in the complaint is transparency. While all smartwatches eventually stop receiving software updates, some competitors state their guaranteed update periods when new devices launch. Apple, by contrast, does not typically provide a fixed software support timeline for Apple Watch models at the time of purchase.

That lack of clarity may leave buyers uncertain about how long their device will receive major updates. For premium products such as the Apple Watch Ultra, which launched as a high-end rugged smartwatch, consumers may reasonably expect several years of full software support.

The lawsuit could put pressure on Apple to be more specific about update guarantees for future Apple Watch models. It also highlights a broader concern in the tech industry: as devices become more dependent on software, the end of update support can have a major impact on product longevity, resale value, and consumer trust.

For current Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch Ultra, and Apple Watch SE 2 owners, the devices are not becoming unusable overnight. Fitness tracking, notifications, health features, and core smartwatch functions should continue to work. However, missing out on watchOS 27 means these models may gradually fall behind newer Apple Watch versions in features, compatibility, and security improvements.

As the case moves forward, it may become an important test of how much responsibility tech companies have to disclose software support timelines before customers buy connected devices. For Apple Watch buyers, the lawsuit sends a clear message: software updates are no longer just a bonus feature, but a major part of the product’s real-world lifespan.
