Apple is navigating challenging waters with its generative AI capabilities, as its position in this area lags behind leaders like OpenAI, Meta, and Microsoft. A recent lawsuit from its own shareholder, linked to delayed Siri enhancements, underscores Apple’s struggles. In response, the tech giant is reportedly considering acquiring Perplexity, a renowned AI startup, to bolster its AI initiatives.
Perplexity holds a valuation of $14 billion. If Apple proceeds with this acquisition, it would mark the most significant purchase in the company’s history. Recent reports suggest that Apple’s service head, Eddy Cue, and mergers and acquisitions chief, Adrian Perica, have been in preliminary talks regarding this potential deal. However, Perplexity claims no knowledge of any ongoing discussions.
Even if the acquisition doesn’t materialize, a collaboration could still be on the horizon. There’s speculation that Safari might incorporate Perplexity’s AI search capabilities, while Siri could see enhanced features by 2026. This move could be strategic, especially if Apple’s lucrative $20 billion annual deal with Google—ensuring its default search engine status—faces termination due to antitrust pressures.
This acquisition, while costly, could offer Apple a fresh avenue for revenue and innovation. In recent legal testimonies, executives like Eddy Cue and Craig Federighi have highlighted Apple’s ongoing efforts with various partners to amplify its AI offerings, hinting at possible future collaborations.
