The much-anticipated anime adaptation of Oshoshio’s gag comedy manga, “My Deer Friend Nokotan,” is set to make its debut in July, with production by the notable Wit Studio. Viewers around the world can catch the series as it streams on popular platforms including Crunchyroll, Amazon Prime Video, ADN, and Anime Onegai. Additionally, fans in Japan can watch the premiere on television, with Tokyo MX and BS NTV broadcasting the first episode on July 7th.
For early birds eager to catch a glimpse of “My Deer Friend Nokotan,” the ABEMA streaming service will offer the premiere episode starting July 3. The anime will be accessible in Japanese, along with a host of subtitles to cater to an international audience, featuring languages such as English, Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, French, German, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Malaysian, Thai, and Traditional Chinese.
A veteran of comedic anime, Masahiko Oota, known for “Gabriel Dropout,” “Minami-ke,” and “Yuru-yuri,” takes the lead as director of the series. Joining him are Takashi Aoshima as head writer, Yasuhiro Misawa as the lead music composer, and Ayumu Tsujimura as the character designer.
The voice cast promises to bring a lively dynamic to an already exuberant series. Megumi Han (renowned for her role as Akko in “Little Witch Academia”) will voice the antlered, titular character Noko “Nokotan” Shikanoko. Alongside her, Saki Fujita, the voice behind virtual sensation Hatsune Miku, will portray Torako “Koshitan” Koshi. With their combined talent, they will also perform the anime’s opening theme “Shikairo Days.” Han and Fujita continue to showcase their vocal talents with the ending theme, “Shika-senbei no Uta.”
The series also features a roster of characters voiced by a talented cast including Fuka Izumi, Rui Tanabe, Love Live’s Yurika Kubo, Rio Tsuchiya, and Chinatsu Akasaki. The diverse characters range from a student council vice president cat girl to other council members each with their unique quirks and personalities.
“My Deer Friend Nokotan” weaves a tale of Torako, a model student council president with a delinquent past she wishes to keep secret. Her life takes a turn when Nokotan, a girl with deer antlers, appears and enrolls in her school. Nokotan’s peculiar attributes include a deer nose that uncovers Torako’s hidden history. What follows is a series of captivating misadventures.
Originally serialized in Kodansha’s Shounen Magazine Edge in November 2019 and later moving to the Magazine Pocket website in 2023, “My Deer Friend Nokotan” has released five volumes to date. Kodansha USA publishes the manga in English, making it accessible to an even broader readership.
