Google Releases Android 17 and Wear OS 7 With Major AI Upgrades, Pixel Drop Features, and Better Security
Google has officially rolled out the final version of Android 17, alongside Wear OS 7 for smartwatches. The update is arriving first on Pixel devices and comes with a fresh Pixel Drop packed with new AI-powered tools, security improvements, productivity features, and smartwatch enhancements.
The release makes one thing clear: Google wants Android and Pixel devices to be the main showcase for its latest artificial intelligence technology. Android 17 puts Gemini and other advanced AI models at the center of the user experience, bringing new ways to create content, communicate across languages, manage apps, and stay safe.
One of the biggest additions in this Pixel Drop is expanded AI support. Gemini Omni now allows users to edit videos through natural conversation, making video adjustments feel more intuitive and less dependent on traditional editing tools. The Gemini app is also gaining access to Lyria 3, Google’s music-generation model, which can create music tracks from text prompts, images, or a combination of both.
For Pixel 10a users, Google is adding improved speech-to-speech translation powered by AudioLM. This feature is designed to make real-time translated conversations smoother and more natural, helping users communicate more easily across different languages.
Android Quick Share is also getting a notable upgrade. The file-sharing feature will now work with Apple’s AirDrop on older Pixel 8a and Pixel 9a devices, making it easier for users to share files between Android and Apple products. This could be especially useful for people who regularly exchange photos, videos, documents, or other files with friends, family, or coworkers using iPhones.
Google is also improving call features on Pixel phones. Users will be able to record a personalized outgoing audio message for callers when they cannot answer the phone. In addition, the “Take a Message” feature is expanding to more international markets, giving more users access to voicemail-style call handling with smarter functionality.
Android 17 introduces a new “bubble bar,” a user interface feature designed to make multitasking faster. Recent apps can appear as bubbles at the bottom of the screen, allowing users to organize, move, and quickly reopen them. This feature is aimed at people who frequently switch between apps and want a smoother workflow without constantly returning to the home screen or app drawer.
Content creators are also getting a useful new tool. Android 17 allows users to record their phone screen and selfie camera at the same time. Foldable phone users are getting a gaming-focused upgrade too. Android 17 introduces a new foldable gaming mode with a 50/50 layout and a dynamic game pad. This setup is designed to make better use of larger foldable displays and improve the gaming experience on compatible devices.
Wear OS 7 brings important updates to Google Pixel Watch owners. Emergency detection is being expanded, allowing the watch to automatically contact emergency services and selected emergency contacts if it detects a car crash, a hard fall, or a lack of pulse. These safety features make the Pixel Watch more useful in critical situations where the wearer may not be able to respond.
Pixel Watch users will also be able to receive live updates from phone apps directly on their smartwatch. This should make it easier to track important information at a glance without constantly checking a phone.
Google is also preparing Wear OS for deeper integration with future AI-powered hardware, including upcoming smart glasses and accessories such as headphones. The goal appears to be a more connected ecosystem where watches, phones, and wearable devices work together more intelligently.
Later this summer, Wear OS is expected to gain additional Gemini Intelligence features. These will include tools that let users create personalized widgets simply by describing what they want. Google also plans to introduce “Personal Intelligence,” which can connect Gemini with Google apps and chat history to provide more personalized assistance.
Battery life is another focus in Wear OS 7. Google says the update can improve battery performance by up to 10%, depending on the device and usage. Multistep automation is also coming, allowing users to create more advanced routines and actions across their smartwatch and connected devices.
