Amplitude Acquires Command AI to Enhance App User Interaction Capabilities

Amplitude, a leader in digital analytics software, has recently expanded its portfolio by acquiring Command AI, a startup focused on app user engagement formerly known as CommandBar. This acquisition will see most of Command AI’s talented 30-member team, based in San Francisco, joining forces with Amplitude.

James Evans, who co-founded Command AI and serves as its CEO, surprised many by agreeing to the acquisition. According to Evans, this wasn’t a move they were actively seeking, as the company was already on a solid growth trajectory and financially secure. However, when Amplitude approached them during the summer, it became evident that a partnership would accelerate their growth and extend their reach more effectively.

Command AI was launched in 2021 with an innovative approach to help developers integrate search functions seamlessly into web apps. Alongside co-founders Richard Freling and Vinay Ayyala, Evans initially rolled out an in-app search bar offering personalized results and app feature highlights. Their offerings soon expanded to include a chatbot and AI Co-Browsing, which guides users through app features by controlling their mouse actions. A new feature, Nudge Autopilot, is in development to automatically remind users about app functionalities based on metrics.

Command AI has significantly impacted the industry with its products, used by over 25 million end-users in apps from notable clients such as Hashicorp, Gusto, Yotpo, and LaunchDarkly. Before its acquisition by Amplitude, the company secured $23.8 million in funding from investors like Insight Partners, Itai Tsiddon, and Thrive Capital.

Amplitude’s CEO, Spenser Skates, sees significant potential in integrating Command AI’s technology into their existing platforms. Early next year, Amplitude plans to introduce features like checklists and guides through Command AI, allowing users to create comprehensive action plans and product tours. In addition, new capabilities for “smart triggers” will enable automated updates and special offers within apps, enhancing user engagement.

Evans considers this integration a natural next step for Command AI, which already maintained connectors to Amplitude. He envisions a harmonious partnership between analyzing user behavior with Amplitude’s tools and influencing it through Command AI’s solutions, creating a symbiotic feedback loop.

Upon finalizing the acquisition, Evans will assume the role of Director of Product at Amplitude, while his co-founder Ayyala will become the Engineering Director. They will oversee the Command AI product organization within Amplitude, ensuring that current Command AI customers continue to receive service until the year’s end.

This acquisition marks Amplitude’s third since its inception over a decade ago, following its purchase of ClearBrain in 2020 and Iteratively in 2021. With over 2,700 paying customers, including several Fortune 100 companies, Amplitude’s strategic acquisitions solidify its position as a critical player in digital analytics and user engagement.
