AMD’s latest CPU releases, the Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X, part of the “Zen 5” series, have experienced a sluggish start in sales, particularly at Germany’s largest retailer, where only 50 units were sold during the first week of launch. Given that the Ryzen 7 7800X3D from AMD’s current generation is experiencing strong sales along with discounted prices, the new series seems to be struggling to claim its market share.
The Ryzen 7 9700X sold 30 units and the Ryzen 5 9600X sold 20 units at Mindfactory, which is well-known for being a barometer for AMD product launches due to its robust sales of their CPUs. In contrast, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D alone sold 950 units in the same period, demonstrating the popularity of the existing AMD offerings over the new Zen 5 CPUs.
Despite the slow start in Germany, the outlook is somewhat brighter in Asian markets, according to reports from shopkeepers who managed to sell their entire stock of the Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X, citing balanced performance and competitive pricing as key selling points.
The response towards the Ryzen 9 series is also anticipated to be strong among enthusiasts eagerly waiting for the latest high-end components for their PCs. In situ comments from various shopkeepers reveal that while there wasn’t the same fervor or long lines as in previous launches, the Ryzen 7 9700X in particular has fared relatively well in their stores, signaling a potentially positive acceptance.
These mixed reactions come amid an atmosphere where Intel is facing challenges with a reported “Instability” fiasco, potentially providing a window for AMD to capture additional interest. However, AMD has its challenges with supply, as suggested by smaller stock numbers possibly impacted by a recall AMD instigated due to last-minute quality checks. European stores are also expecting their initial batches of Zen 5 CPUs, which might sway the market dynamics in the coming days.
The Ryzen 9 9950X and Ryzen 9 9900X are highly anticipated, and their release is expected to generate significant interest, potentially echoing the success of previous 3D models such as the 5800X3D and the 7800X3D.
Overall, the sales performance of AMD’s new CPU offerings in the market will be observed closely over the next few months. The future success of these chips might hinge on factors like broader availability, continued reviews on their performance, market reception to their value proposition, and AMD’s ability to address and resolve the recent supply hiccups.
