AMD RX 9070 XT vs Nvidia RTX 4080: Head-to-Head Showdown in Graphics Innovations

The next wave of graphics cards from Nvidia, the RTX 50 Blackwell series, isn’t exactly setting the tech world on fire. According to recent evaluations of the series’ top players, the RTX 5090 and the RTX 5080, there’s no dramatic leap in performance compared to their predecessors. The RTX 5090 edges past the RTX 4090 by a modest 27%, while the RTX 5080 barely surpasses the RTX 4080 Super with just under a 20% gain. Given this trend, it’s highly anticipated that the upcoming RTX 5070 and RTX 5070 Ti won’t break new ground either.

Enter AMD, which might just seize this opportunity to outshine Nvidia in the mid-range GPU segment. A prominent tech leaker, Moore’s Law Is Dead, suggests that AMD’s new models— the RX 9070 XT and RX 9070—are being designed with noteworthy targets. The RX 9070 XT is set to eclipse the RTX 4080 by a slim margin of 3%, while the RX 9070 aims to achieve around 85% of the RTX 4080’s performance.

Interestingly, these performance goals indicate significant competition. Using 4K benchmark data from trusted sources, the RX 9070 XT is projected to trail slightly behind the RX 7900 XTX, with less than a 10% performance gap between it and the RTX 5080. Meanwhile, the RX 9070 is expected to outperform both the RX 7900 GRE and the RTX 4070 Ti, yet lag somewhat behind the RX 7900 XT.

Further insights reveal that if we stack the RX 9070/XT against Nvidia’s future RTX 5070/Ti, the RX 9070 XT emerges as a potential champion, potentially outperforming the RTX 5070 Ti by 15%. The RX 9070 could also outpace the RTX 5070 by about 12%. However, these are speculative figures and could change once the cards officially hit the market. Notably, Nvidia’s focus on the DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation for the RTX 50 series might shift these dynamics.

Perhaps most intriguing is AMD’s stride in ray tracing technology. The RX 9070 reportedly performs at the level of the RX 7900 XTX and can rival the RTX 4070 Super in games like Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K resolution. The RX 9070 XT is purported to exceed even this, vying with the RTX 4070 Ti Super.

As these new releases approach, the graphics card landscape looks to become increasingly competitive, with AMD poised to challenge Nvidia’s dominance, at least in the mid-range market. How these predictions hold up will soon be revealed, sparking excitement and anticipation among tech enthusiasts and gamers alike.
