This unfortunate tale involves Anthony, a man who wishes to keep his last name confidential, who fell victim to a sophisticated scheme that cost him $25,000 from his savings.
The deception began with a call from someone claiming to be his son, urgently pleading for help after allegedly being involved in an accident with a pregnant woman. The call was so convincing that Anthony believed he was talking to his actual son, thanks to the advanced technology mimicking his voice.
The plot thickened with a second call from “Michael Roberts,” claiming to be a lawyer for Anthony’s son. He insisted on a payment of $9,200 to cover bail, threatening that failure to pay would result in the son serving 45 days in jail. With his calls to his son diverting to voicemail, Anthony was gripped by panic.
In his desperation, Anthony went to a bank under the pretense of securing funds for solar panel installation, a story concocted to avoid raising any red flags. Upon returning home, his daughter made a call to the supposed lawyer, Michael Roberts, as advised. This call led to an arrangement where the money would be picked up via an Uber driver, hastily placed inside a manila envelope.
Soon after, another call came — this time from a “Mark Cohen,” who posed as a second lawyer. Cohen falsely claimed that the pregnant woman had unfortunately died, which inflated the alleged bail to a staggering $25,000. By the time Anthony and his daughter realized they had been duped, it was too late.
