AI Boom Pushes Samsung to Raise 5nm and 4nm Wafer Prices by 15%

Samsung is reportedly raising prices for some of its advanced chip manufacturing services as global demand for AI semiconductors continues to reshape the foundry market. The move comes as artificial intelligence infrastructure spending fuels intense competition for limited production capacity, giving major contract chipmakers more leverage over pricing.

According to industry sources cited by Korean media, Samsung has increased wafer prices for select process technologies, with the biggest changes focused on its 5-nanometer and 4-nanometer nodes. These advanced manufacturing processes are commonly used for high-performance processors, including chips designed for AI, data centers, and other demanding computing workloads. The reported increase is around 15%.

The pricing shift reflects a major change in the semiconductor foundry business. In previous years, chip manufacturers often planned capacity around customer demand forecasts, working closely with companies preparing next-generation processors for smartphones, PCs, servers, and consumer electronics. Large customers could secure early access to production lines by committing investment or long-term orders ahead of major product launches.

Now, the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure has changed the balance. Demand for advanced chips has grown faster than available supply, especially as cloud providers, AI companies, and hardware makers race to secure enough high-performance silicon for training and running large AI models. As a result, the industry is moving from demand-driven pricing to supply-driven pricing.

In a supply-driven environment, foundries with advanced production capacity can charge more because customers are competing for limited wafer availability. Companies willing to pay higher prices may have a better chance of securing the manufacturing slots they need, especially for cutting-edge chips used in AI accelerators and high-performance computing systems.

Samsung’s strategy appears to be more selective than some broader industry price increases. Rather than raising prices across a wide range of technologies, the company is reportedly focusing on nodes where demand is strongest and supply is tighter. The 4nm and 5nm processes are particularly important because they sit in a key performance and cost range for many advanced chips.

The price hikes also come at a time when chipmakers are facing rising investment costs. Building and upgrading advanced semiconductor fabrication facilities requires enormous capital spending, especially as process technologies become more complex. Extreme ultraviolet lithography equipment, advanced packaging, yield improvements, and new materials all add to the cost of staying competitive in the foundry business.

Higher wafer prices could help Samsung offset some of those costs while also improving profitability in areas where demand remains strong. However, the increases may also raise expenses for chip designers, which could eventually affect pricing for AI hardware, servers, and other electronics that rely on advanced semiconductors.

The broader foundry market has already been seeing signs of price pressure. Earlier reports indicated that TSMC had also moved to raise prices, including for some mature and advanced process technologies. Those increases were said to be in the range of 5% to 10%, depending on the node and customer agreements. TSMC has previously stated that its pricing strategy is based on long-term value and close cooperation with customers rather than short-term opportunity.

For Samsung, the latest reported price adjustment highlights its effort to benefit from booming AI chip demand while continuing to compete in the global semiconductor manufacturing market. The company has been working to strengthen its foundry business and attract more customers for advanced nodes, particularly as demand grows for custom AI processors and data center chips.

Industry analysts believe chip manufacturing prices may remain elevated as long as AI demand continues to outpace supply. With tech giants investing heavily in AI servers, accelerators, and cloud infrastructure, advanced foundry capacity is expected to remain one of the most valuable resources in the global technology supply chain.

If demand stays strong, Samsung and other major chipmakers may continue to gain pricing power. That could mark a lasting shift for the semiconductor industry, where access to advanced manufacturing capacity becomes just as important as chip design itself.
