Aggelos II Release Date Confirmed for PC and Consoles, Bringing Retro Metroidvania Action This August
Publishers PQube and PixelHeart, together with developer Wonderboy Bobi, have officially confirmed the release date for Aggelos II, the upcoming sequel to the retro-inspired action-adventure game. The 2D Metroidvania adventure is set to launch on August 27 for Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5.
A physical edition is also planned for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5, giving collectors and retro gaming fans another reason to keep an eye on this anticipated sequel.
Aggelos II builds on the foundation of the original game while expanding its world, combat, visuals, and exploration. This time, the adventure embraces a richer 16-bit pixel art style, delivering a more detailed and vibrant classic side-scrolling experience. Fans of old-school action RPGs, platformers, and Metroidvania games can expect a mix of fast-paced combat, puzzle-solving, exploration, and character progression.
The story places players in the role of an Aggelos, one of the highest-ranking angels, during a time when the gods are on the brink of defeat against the Army of Darkness. Sent by Balro into Lumen, the realm of the supreme god of light, players must fight through a world under siege while navigating two overlapping dimensions: Light and Darkness.
This dual-realm system is at the center of Aggelos II’s gameplay. The Light and Dark worlds exist on top of one another, and shifting between them is essential for survival, exploration, and puzzle-solving. Each realm introduces its own dangers, enemies, hidden paths, and challenges, encouraging players to think carefully about when and how to switch forms.
In Angel mode, players move with greater precision and a more defensive style. This form allows the character to absorb light projectiles, activate light-based switches, and handle situations that require careful timing. Demon mode, on the other hand, is built for speed and aggression. It lets players break through shadow barriers, hit harder, and use dark powers to overpower enemies.
Combat in Aggelos II is designed around this constant transformation between Angel and Demon forms. Success depends on reading enemy patterns, reacting quickly, and switching between Celestial and Infernal abilities at the right moment. With hordes of enemies and 13 major bosses to defeat, the game promises battles that reward skill, timing, and smart decision-making.
Progression also plays a major role in the adventure. As players explore heavenly heights and darker depths, they will collect Orbs that can be used to unlock new skills and upgrades. Abilities such as dashing, wall-jumping, flight, and powerful special attacks will open new paths and make combat more dynamic. Magical potions will also help players push further into dangerous territory and survive tougher encounters.
Aggelos II aims to deliver the kind of classic 2D action-adventure experience that fans of retro games love, while adding modern design ideas through its dual-form mechanics and layered world structure. With its combination of exploration, platforming, tactical combat, boss fights, and pixel art visuals, the sequel is shaping up to be a strong choice for players looking for a new Metroidvania game in 2025.
Key features include instant switching between Angel and Demon forms, interconnected Light and Dark realms, tactical combat, hidden secrets, challenging monsters, 13 powerful bosses, unlockable movement abilities, upgradeable skills, and crisp 16-bit side-scrolling visuals.
Aggelos II launches on August 27 for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PS5. With two forms, two realms, and one epic journey, this retro action-adventure sequel is ready to test players’ reflexes and reward their mastery.
