Acebeam UC3A hands-on: A tiny EDC flashlight with USB-C battery, magnetic mount, and colorful side lighting
The Acebeam UC3A is the kind of pocket flashlight that looks simple at first, but becomes more interesting once you start using it. Compact, lightweight, and packed with practical features, it is designed for everyday carry users who want more than a basic beam in their pocket.
We had the chance to take a closer look at the Acebeam UC3A during a visit to Acebeam’s headquarters in Shenzhen. Alongside other new lights, this small model stood out because of its size, versatility, and unusual battery design. At just 65 grams, the UC3A is light enough to disappear into a pocket, backpack, tool pouch, or glove box, making it a strong option for anyone looking for a compact EDC flashlight.
One of the most interesting features is its replaceable battery. Acebeam uses a AAA-sized lithium-ion cell, specifically a 10440 cylindrical battery. What makes it notable is the built-in USB-C charging port integrated directly into the battery itself. USB-C rechargeable AA-style cells are more common, but seeing the same idea in a smaller AAA-sized format is less typical.
This design has clear pros and cons. Since the USB-C port is on the battery, the cell has to be removed from the flashlight for charging. That may be slightly less convenient than plugging a cable directly into the flashlight body. However, the benefit is flexibility: users can carry spare cells and swap them when needed. The UC3A also supports standard AAA primary batteries, which could be useful in emergencies, though that feature was not tested during the hands-on session.
Battery capacity is modest at 1.5 watt-hours, which is expected for such a small flashlight. During testing, one unit had a lower charge than another and was visibly dimmer. Since the UC3A does not include a battery level indicator, brightness drop-off can act as an indirect clue that the battery is running low.
Operation is simple thanks to the two-button layout. The first button controls the front-facing flashlight beam. Holding the button while turning the light on activates moonlight mode, which is useful for very low-light situations where you do not want to ruin night vision. A single press turns on the front lights in medium mode, while holding the button cycles through three brightness levels. Moonlight mode is separate and not part of the regular brightness cycle.
The second button controls the side light, which adds much of the UC3A’s personality. The white side light works similarly to the main beam, though it offers only two brightness levels. These are enough for most close-range tasks, with one setting suitable for darker environments and the other better for situations where some ambient light is already present.
The side light also offers multiple colors. After turning it on, a double-click cycles through red, green, and blue modes. Each color also includes a flashing option. There is also an alternating red-and-blue emergency-style strobe and a rainbow animation mode.
This side light makes the Acebeam UC3A more useful than a traditional pocket flashlight. It can be clipped to a backpack, belt, or cap to work as a warning or visibility light. The white side light can also be used as a small ambient lamp. Thanks to the strong magnetic back panel, the UC3A can attach to metal surfaces, making it useful in garages, workshops, vehicles, and even inside a PC case while building or repairing a system.
That magnetic design is one of the UC3A’s biggest strengths. For anyone who works with tools, electronics, or tight spaces, being able to stick the light to a metal surface and work hands-free is a major advantage. It makes the flashlight feel more like a mini work light than just a small beam for walking at night.
In terms of brightness, the UC3A is not trying to compete with large high-output flashlights. Its size naturally limits its power. Still, it is bright enough for everyday tasks such as finding items in a bag, walking in the dark, checking under furniture, working in a cabinet, or handling small repairs. The side light is also bright enough for practical use, especially at close range.
Not everything is perfect. The blue side light does not look especially clean and tends to appear muddy, leaning toward purple rather than a true blue. For users who care about accurate color output, that mode may be the least appealing. The red and green lights perform better and are more in line with expectations. The rainbow animation is surprisingly pleasant, helped by the number of LEDs used for the effect.
One feature that would have made the UC3A even better is a dedicated yellow or amber warning light. The rainbow mode can briefly simulate a similar tone, but there is no way to select yellow as a standalone color. For roadside visibility or caution lighting, a proper amber mode would have been a useful addition.
Overall, the Acebeam UC3A is a well-rounded compact EDC flashlight with more features than its size suggests. The replaceable USB-C rechargeable 10440 battery, magnetic back, clip-friendly design, front beam, side light, color modes, and ambient lighting function all make it a practical tool for daily use.
It is not a powerhouse, and the small battery means users should keep expectations realistic. But as a lightweight everyday carry flashlight, travel light, backpack accessory, mini work light, or hands-free repair companion, the UC3A has a lot to offer.
The Acebeam UC3A is currently listed at around $40 and is available in orange, black, and green. A promo code, 4TBZINQJ, may reduce the price at checkout, though availability and duration may vary.
