8BitDo FlipPad launches as a $29.99 USB-C smartphone controller with retro flip-phone style
8BitDo has officially introduced the FlipPad, a compact smartphone game controller designed for players who want physical controls without carrying a full-size mobile gamepad. First shown earlier this year, the FlipPad is now available for pre-order at $29.99, with shipping scheduled to begin on July 30.
The 8BitDo FlipPad connects directly to a smartphone through USB-C, making it compatible with supported Android devices and iPhones with USB-C. Instead of relying on Bluetooth pairing or battery charging, the controller plugs straight into the phone, offering a simple, low-latency setup for mobile gaming.
What makes the FlipPad stand out is its nostalgic flip design. Inspired by classic flip phones, the controller folds open and closed using a hinge mechanism that 8BitDo says is rated for more than 6,000 open-and-close cycles. The USB-C connector is also built for durability, with a rating of over 10,000 insertions.
Once attached, the FlipPad gives a smartphone a vertical handheld gaming layout. It includes a retro-style D-pad similar to the one found on 8BitDo’s popular SN30 Pro controller, along with ABXY buttons designed to feel clicky, light, and accurate. The controller also includes L1, L2, R1, and R2 shoulder buttons, but instead of placing them on the back, 8BitDo positions them on the front for easier access in the compact form factor.
At launch, the 8BitDo FlipPad comes in two color options. The first is G Classic, an off-white retro-inspired finish that matches the company’s familiar vintage gaming aesthetic. The second is the new EDC Black Edition, which features an all-black look, including black buttons for a cleaner and more modern appearance.
The EDC Black Edition will be sold exclusively through 8BitDo’s own online store, while the G Classic version is expected to be available through the company’s store and partner retailers.
With its $29.99 price, USB-C connection, foldable pocket-friendly design, and retro gaming controls, the 8BitDo FlipPad could appeal to mobile gamers who want a simple controller for cloud gaming, emulation, and native smartphone games without the bulk of a traditional gamepad.
