8BitDo Channels Commodore 64 Nostalgia with a Retro R8 Mouse Special Edition

8BitDo is leaning even harder into retro tech nostalgia with a fresh new version of its Retro R8 wireless mouse, and this one is built to delight Commodore 64 fans. The new model, officially called the 8BitDo Retro R8 Mouse C64 Edition, takes direct inspiration from the iconic 8-bit home computer first released in 1982, giving modern PC setups a classic throwback look without sacrificing today’s performance features.

The Retro R8 Mouse originally launched in 2024 alongside the Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard Xbox Edition, sporting a transparent green shell that mirrored the look of the original Xbox. A second version arrived in April 2025 with a design inspired by the Nintendo Entertainment System. Now there’s a third option, and it’s designed to pair perfectly with 8BitDo’s Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard Commodore 64 edition for anyone building a coordinated retro-themed desk setup.

In terms of styling, the C64 Edition nails the vintage computer vibe. The body is finished in a warm tan tone reminiscent of the original machine, while the scroll wheel, sides, and underside switch to a contrasting dark brown. Red programmable buttons add a pop of color that feels right at home in the retro palette. The included charging dock also matches the same classic color scheme, and even features a recognizable rainbow-style logo detail that completes the tribute.

While the design is new, the core specs remain largely the same as the other Retro R8 variants. The mouse uses an ambidextrous shape and supports multiple connection modes, including Bluetooth, 2.4GHz wireless via the included dongle, and wired use when you want zero interruptions. It also comes equipped with a PAW 3395 sensor, four programmable buttons, and an adjustable polling rate for users who like to fine-tune responsiveness for work or gaming.

Battery life is another highlight. The Retro R8 Mouse C64 Edition packs a 450mAh battery and is rated for up to 100 hours of use in Bluetooth mode, or up to 105 hours in 2.4GHz wireless mode. One noteworthy internal change is the switch choice: this C64 model uses Huano micro switches, while the Xbox and NES editions use Kailh Sword GM X micro switches.

Pricing stays consistent with the previous releases. The 8BitDo Retro R8 Mouse C64 Edition is priced at $49.99, matching the Xbox and NES versions. Better yet, it’s not a “announce now, wait months” situation—8BitDo has already started selling it, so it’s available to buy right away.
