161 Hours in Path of Exile 2: A Journey of Regrets

Playing through Act 2 of Path of Exile 2 is quite the experience—a combination of thrilling challenges and exasperating trials. The journey kicks off with what seems like a manageable task: dealing with pesky hyenas blocking a caravan. However, these hyenas introduce a new level of chaos: relentless projectile attacks from hidden foes and swarms of tough adversaries. The confrontation with Rathbreaker proved to be a real test, with off-screen adversaries finally charging in just as I celebrated the victory. Excitement turned to disappointment, though, as the loot vanished without a trace—a common theme this early in the game.

Perseverance leads into Mawdun Quarry, an endless expanse that feels more like a marathon than a quest. The sprawling map design seems purposely intricate, maybe to spark the inner explorer, though the rewards often seem scant—a modest pile of gold and a lackluster blue item after hours of navigation. The encounter with Rudja, the Dread Engineer, introduces the devastating one-shot attack mechanic, a pattern that ensures players stay on their toes.

The journey through Traitor’s Passage and Halani Gates offers relief with less sprawl but comes with its fair share of annoying mobs—each designed to chip away at patience. At the pinnacle of this area, Jamanra, the Abomination, introduces yet more intense boss mechanics. With healthier foes springing back to life mid-battle, triumphant moments are often short-lived, though Jamanra surprisingly decides to retreat.

The Mastodon Badlands, aptly nicknamed The Bone Zone, soon restores the level of intense challenge. Here, I learned the importance of elemental resistances, as mere max health isn’t enough to survive the lightning-fast onslaughts from lurking foes. Then, as if scripted from a gaming nightmare, I faced the Wish version of Ornstein and Smough, where dodging became an art form amidst electrifying arena conditions.

Moving forward, Keth provides a merciful pause as the snake lady rewards skill points. However, Azarian, the Forsaken Son, unleashes his own brand of environmental chaos, shrinking the battlefield with hazardous zones. Surviving these gauntlets becomes all about mastering the nuances of restricted space.

Venturing into the Valley of the Titans, I encountered new enemies: elusive sand worms phasing in and out of existence. While the tornado spells and transitioning foes invoke frustration, perseverance in this massive territory uncovers another formidable boss with a colossal health pool. The realization of needing new strategies becomes clear with each swipe of the weapon.

Path of Exile 2 then leads into Deshar, where toxic pools and posthumous attacks are a constant obstacle. The labyrinth of corridors infested with lightning-speed enemies turns navigation into an ordeal, reminiscent of earlier levels but with a heightened intensity and larger battles to endure.

Finally, the Dreadnaught awaits: Act 2’s crowning challenge with a showdown against Jamanra. Inspired by classic boss sequences, the trek back through a gauntlet of obstacles becomes as challenging as the encounter itself. Here, the notorious instant attacks, sweeping blows, and crowded battlefield navigation come to a head. It was the moment of truth—and my warrior decided it was time for a break. Switching to a different class seemed the only way forward.

Path of Exile 2 is a testament to perseverance, testing not only strategic thinking but also adaptability, especially when the game seems to favor ranged combat over melee engagements. The world of Act 2 is vast and punishing but also offers its own thrill for those willing to git gud and embrace the learning curve.
