Windows 11 26H2 Rolls Out, Bringing AI-Powered Actions to File Explorer

Windows 11 26H2 Update Begins Rolling Out With AI File Explorer Features and Longer Support

Microsoft has started releasing Windows 11 version 26H2, also known as the Windows 11 2026 Update, for eligible PCs. The rollout began on September 29, 2026, and is arriving gradually through Windows Update.

For many users, this update should be quick and relatively simple to install. Devices already running Windows 11 version 24H2 or 25H2 will receive version 26H2 as a small enablement package rather than a full operating system upgrade. That means most of the underlying features have already been delivered through previous monthly updates, and the new package mainly turns them on.

In most cases, installing Windows 11 26H2 requires only one restart.

One of the biggest benefits of upgrading is the refreshed support timeline. After installing Windows 11 version 26H2, Home and Pro editions receive 24 months of updates, extending support through October 2028. Enterprise and Education editions receive 36 months of updates, keeping them supported through October 2029.

Microsoft is using a phased rollout, so not every eligible PC will receive the update at the same time. Availability may depend on hardware compatibility, device configuration, and any temporary safeguard holds related to known issues.

It is also worth noting that PCs running Windows 11 version 26H1 cannot upgrade directly to 26H2. That version is based on a different Windows core, which means it does not follow the same update path as versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2.

A major focus of the Windows 11 2026 Update is File Explorer. Microsoft is adding new AI-powered actions designed to make everyday file management faster and more useful.

With the new AI actions, users can perform supported image edits or summarize documents directly from File Explorer. The Summarize feature works with files stored in OneDrive and SharePoint, but it requires a Microsoft 365 subscription and a Copilot license.

For users signed in with a work or school account, File Explorer Home also gains additional options when hovering over files. These include Open File Location and Ask Copilot, making it easier to find files or get AI assistance without opening extra menus.

File Explorer also gains broader archive support. Windows 11 26H2 adds compatibility with uu, cpio, xar, and nupkg archive formats, giving users more flexibility when working with compressed or packaged files. Another convenience improvement is the ability to rename files using voice typing, which may be especially useful for accessibility and hands-free workflows.

The taskbar is also becoming more flexible. With Windows 11 version 26H2, users can place the taskbar at the bottom, top, left, or right side of the screen. Microsoft is also adding a smaller taskbar size option for those who want more screen space.

For commercial devices, app-specific taskbar actions are enabled by default. This should help business users access app-related controls more quickly and streamline common workplace tasks.

Security is another important part of the Windows 11 26H2 update. Microsoft is integrating Sysmon directly into Windows. Sysmon records system activity in the Windows Event Log, helping administrators monitor suspicious behavior and investigate security incidents. However, Sysmon is turned off by default and must be enabled before it starts collecting events.

Administrator protection is also included, though it is disabled by default. This feature is designed to improve security by granting just-in-time administrator privileges and separating admin profiles from standard user activity. Organizations can enable it through Intune or Group Policy.

Windows 11 26H2 also introduces API support for post-quantum cryptography algorithms, including ML-KEM and ML-DSA. These technologies are part of a broader industry effort to prepare systems for future security threats linked to quantum computing.

Microsoft is also tightening driver security. The company is removing default kernel trust for cross-signed drivers after an audit period that includes at least 100 hours and three restarts. This change is intended to reduce risk from older or less secure driver trust models.

Recovery features are improving as well. First sign-in restore in Windows settings backup now supports Microsoft Entra hybrid joined devices and Cloud PCs. This should make it easier for users in business and cloud-based environments to restore their settings when signing in on a new or reset device.

Another recovery feature, point-in-time restore, allows a PC to be rolled back to a recent restore point. This can include apps, settings, and personal files, offering a more complete recovery option if something goes wrong after a system change.

Overall, Windows 11 version 26H2 is not a dramatic overhaul, but it is an important update for users and organizations already on recent Windows 11 releases. The enablement package approach should make installation faster, while the new support window, AI-powered File Explorer tools, taskbar flexibility, security improvements, and recovery enhancements make the Windows 11 2026 Update a practical upgrade for eligible PCs.
