Volkswagen is breaking new ground with its introduction into the plug-in hybrid market by unveiling the revised models of the Golf eHybrid and GTE. These versions stand out with their enhanced charging capabilities and powertrains.
The two new variants have embraced the latest in charging technology, supporting an impressive 11 kilowatts (kW) via AC charging and can ramp up to 50kW with DC fast charging. This transition towards higher charging rates indicates Volkswagen’s commitment to aligning with evolving electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure and user needs.
Powering these vehicles is a newly developed Volkswagen engine, which delivers a substantial system power of up to 150kW, equating to 204 horsepower (HP) for the eHybrid, and an even more robust 200kW or 272 HP for the GTE. This improvement in power is likely to provide drivers with an engaging and responsive driving experience, appropriate for both daily commuting and spirited driving sessions.
Noteworthy, though, is the electric range of these models. The Golf eHybrid has an estimated electric range of up to 131 kilometers (~81 miles), and the GTE offers a slightly higher potential mileage of up to 143 kilometers (~89 miles) on a single charge. While these numbers might not set records in the EV industry, when combined with the traditional engine—a new 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine featuring advanced variable-turbocharger geometry (VTG), these cars can reach overall range estimates close to 1,000 kilometers (~621 miles).
Volkswagen’s push into the PHEV sector does come at a premium, with initial European market prices set at roughly €44,240 (~$48,000) for the Golf eHybrid and €46,745 (~$50,800) for the higher-spec GTE model. However, customers receive plenty of luxurious features for their investment, including a generous 12.9-inch touch display and the option to adorn their car with the first LED-lit VW badge. Further enhancing their appeal are new color options such as Anemone Blue, Grenadilla Black, and Oyster Silver metallics.
Despite their less-than-stellar range, the new Volkswagen Golf eHybrid and GTE models represent a significant step towards electrified mobility, offering a blend of power and tech amenities that will attract buyers looking for the premium PHEV experience. Their arrival signals Volkswagen’s continued efforts to expand its electric lineup and adapt to the fast-paced changes within the automotive industry.
