VinFast Bets Big on India as Global EV Sales Fall Short

VinFast Targets India as a Key Electric Vehicle Market Alongside Vietnam

Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast is setting its sights on India as one of its most important growth markets, placing the country alongside Vietnam in its long-term global expansion strategy.

Tapan Ghosh, CEO of VinFast Asia, said the company aims to make India one of its two largest markets as demand for electric vehicles continues to rise across the region. The Nasdaq-listed EV maker expects Asia, including its home market of Vietnam, to contribute around 90% of its global sales by 2030.

India is emerging as a major opportunity for global electric vehicle brands. With a large population, growing urban mobility needs, rising fuel costs, and stronger government support for clean transportation, the country is becoming one of the world’s most attractive EV markets. VinFast’s focus on India reflects the company’s ambition to compete in high-growth regions rather than relying only on mature automotive markets.

VinFast has been working to expand its presence beyond Vietnam as part of its broader international strategy. The company has introduced electric cars, scooters, and related mobility solutions, positioning itself as a fast-growing challenger in the global EV industry.

By prioritizing India, VinFast is looking to tap into a market where electric vehicle adoption is still in the early stages but growing quickly. The country’s push for battery-powered mobility, expanding charging infrastructure, and increasing consumer awareness could create strong demand for affordable and efficient electric cars in the coming years.

Asia is expected to remain the center of VinFast’s growth plan. The company’s goal of generating 90% of global sales from the region by 2030 highlights its confidence in Asian markets, where rising incomes, dense cities, and government-backed sustainability programs are helping accelerate the shift to electric mobility.

VinFast’s India strategy could also strengthen competition in the country’s EV sector, which is already attracting both domestic and international automakers. As more brands enter the market, Indian consumers may benefit from a wider range of electric vehicles, improved technology, and more competitive pricing.

If VinFast can successfully build brand trust, expand its retail and service network, and offer vehicles suited to Indian driving conditions, India could become a major pillar of its global business. The company’s focus on the market signals that the next phase of EV growth may be shaped not only by the United States, Europe, or China, but also by fast-growing economies across Asia.
