Unlocking the PS5 Pro’s Full Potential Could Pave the Way for the PS6, Says Developer

A developer from Kyodai Ltd. recently suggested that many games aren’t fully leveraging the PS5 Pro’s impressive capabilities. While some titles are compatible with the PlayStation Super Resolution (PSSR), they often overlook the enhanced graphics processing unit (GPU) advantages. Ivaylo Koralsky, highlighting these missed opportunities, believes this approach would ease the transition to the PS6.

Many gamers enjoy the performance enhancements of Sony’s advanced console, but there is a sentiment that not enough games utilize its full potential. Koralsky expressed his views on this matter, emphasizing the need for better PS5 Pro support.

The PS5 Pro’s Unfulfilled Potential

Ivaylo Koralsky from Kyodai Ltd. pointed out that studios are not making the most of the PS5 Pro’s specifications. This discussion took place on the ResetEra forums, where Koralsky argued that the console’s upscaling technology alone is insufficient. The PS5 Pro boasts a GPU with increased memory speed and more compute units, and its ray tracing features deliver realistic lighting and shadows. However, he noted that few games truly harness these enhancements.

The PS5 Pro was designed to offer high-resolution gameplay without compromising frame rates, a vision spearheaded by Lead Architect Mark Cerny. Yet, players often find themselves choosing between resolution and performance. Koralsky explained that by fully utilizing the console, these limitations can be overcome, as seen in one of his projects featuring ray-tracing, a 120Hz mode, and targeting 60 fps.

The reason why more studios aren’t embracing the console’s full capabilities remains uncertain. It might be due to the PS5 Pro’s current market share. Nevertheless, as the console gains traction and more games become PS5 Pro Enhanced, its potential is becoming clearer.

Preparing for the PS6

Koralsky suggested that developers should consider the eventual launch of the PS6. With expectations of backward compatibility, optimizing games for the PS5 Pro now could ensure smoother transitions to the new console later. According to him, such games might perform better on the upcoming system without requiring extensive updates.
