Even decentralized social networks aren’t immune to disruptions. On Thursday, users of the decentralized social platform Bluesky faced an unexpected outage, rendering the app inaccessible for both web and mobile users for nearly an hour. Bluesky attributed the problem to significant networking issues with its Personal Data Servers (PDS).
The outage was first acknowledged at 6:55 PM ET, with a subsequent update at 7:38 PM ET indicating that a solution was being implemented. This incident has led many to wonder how a decentralized network, supposedly free from single points of failure, could experience such a breakdown.
Despite offering decentralization, most users access Bluesky through its official app, operating on the AT Protocol. In principle, anyone can manage the different components of this protocol – from PDS to relays and beyond. However, Bluesky and its infrastructure are still in the early stages, so few have set up independent systems. Those who took that initiative were unaffected by the outage.
Looking ahead, Bluesky aims to build a robust ecosystem with various communities having their own infrastructure and moderation services, leveraging decentralized tools to create safer online environments. A notable example is Blacksky, which focuses on crafting more welcoming digital spaces.
Ultimately, the vision is that Bluesky will be one of many supporting the infrastructure for numerous applications based on the AT Protocol. However, for now, any disruption in Bluesky’s infrastructure will continue to resonate widely.
The downtime incident sparked playful rivalry with Mastodon, another decentralized network running on the ActivityPub protocol. Mastodon users seized the opportunity for humor at Bluesky’s expense. One user, Luke Johnson, humorously noted how the “mighty Bluesky crumbles” while his modest Raspberry Pi continues to operate his Mastodon instance without a hitch. Another quipped about Bluesky’s form of decentralization.
Fortunately, Bluesky swiftly resolved the issue, and service resumed shortly thereafter, reinforcing their commitment to the platform’s growth and resilience in the face of obstacles.
