Understanding the Risks of Telegram’s Peer-to-Peer SMS Login Service

Messaging app Telegram is rolling out a new feature that has stirred up privacy concerns among its users. This feature offers a free premium membership to users who allow the app to use their phone numbers to send one-time SMS passwords (OTPs) to others logging in, featuring a peer-to-peer-based approach.

In select countries, Android users of Telegram can opt into this feature, which rewards them with a code for Telegram Premium. However, there’s a cap of 150 OTP messages per month that the company can send using your number.

Despite the allure of free premium services, there’s a financial drawback. Users may incur charges for both local and international SMS sent via their number, which could surpass the subscription’s cost saved. The feature requires users to reach a quota to maintain the free premium status, suggesting an obligation to stay active.

Beyond the cost implications lies a deeper concern regarding user privacy. While Telegram does offer settings to hide phone numbers from strangers, participating in this system could inadvertently expose the user’s phone number, potentially leading to its misuse.

The company’s terms of service for this login method also raise eyebrows, as they absolve Telegram of any liability for expenses or damages that users might face as a result of their participation. The terms state that Telegram holds no responsibility for any undesirable outcomes users may experience, including costs and damages incurred.

Telegram urges users not to interact with individuals who might contact them after receiving an OTP from their number. However, enforcing such advice effectively is in question.

It’s worth noting that Telegram launched its subscription service offering additional features such as message transcription, unique stickers, enhanced reactions, and more customization options. The app even included exclusive features like Stories for paying members.

As users consider taking advantage of the peer-to-peer SMS login service, it is crucial for them to weigh the benefits against the potential consequences. Not only could they face financial costs, but they might also jeopardize their privacy for the sake of saving money. It’s essential for users to deliberate if the trade-off is genuinely worthwhile and to review their privacy settings thoroughly before participating.
