Ubuntu on Windows Could Soon Surpass Native Ubuntu Desktop Installations

Ubuntu may be approaching a major milestone, but not in the way many Linux users might expect. Canonical believes that Ubuntu installations running through the Windows Subsystem for Linux, commonly known as WSL, could soon outnumber traditional Ubuntu desktop installations.

At first, that idea sounds surprising. Ubuntu has long been one of the most recognizable Linux distributions for desktop users, developers, and open-source enthusiasts. However, the rapid rise of WSL on Windows 11 is changing how people access and use Linux every day.

According to Canonical VP of Engineering Jon Seager, Ubuntu’s growth through WSL is accelerating much faster than its growth on native desktop installations. Seager indicated that Canonical is seeing significantly stronger year-over-year growth in Ubuntu WSL usage compared with standard Ubuntu desktop usage. Based on that trend, he expects Ubuntu users on WSL to exceed native Ubuntu desktop users within the coming months.

This does not mean Windows is replacing Linux overall. Instead, it shows that many users now prefer running Linux tools inside Windows rather than installing Ubuntu as their main operating system. For developers, this setup offers a practical middle ground: they can keep Windows for everyday productivity while using Ubuntu for command-line tools, development environments, scripting, containers, and Linux-based workflows.

WSL was originally created by Microsoft to make Linux tools available directly inside Windows. Over time, it has evolved into a powerful development environment. For many programmers, system administrators, AI researchers, and machine learning engineers, Ubuntu on WSL provides the Linux compatibility they need without requiring a separate machine, dual-boot configuration, or full operating system replacement.

Canonical says this trend is especially common in workplace environments. Many developers receive Windows laptops or desktops from their employers, only to find that their actual workloads depend heavily on Linux. Instead of asking for a different system or spending time setting up a complex dual-boot arrangement, they can install Ubuntu through WSL and begin working in a Linux environment almost immediately.

The growth of Ubuntu on WSL also reflects broader changes in software development. Modern development often depends on Linux-based tools, package managers, containers, automation scripts, cloud services, and AI frameworks. Since much of today’s infrastructure runs on Linux servers, developers benefit from having a Linux environment available locally, even if their main operating system remains Windows.

Microsoft has also continued improving WSL, making it more useful for demanding workloads. Enhancements to file performance, networking, installation, and system integration have helped make WSL feel less like a convenience feature and more like a serious development platform. The addition of WSL Containers further expands its usefulness by allowing developers to build and run Linux containers directly within Windows.

For Ubuntu, this shift could be significant. While traditional desktop Linux adoption has grown slowly compared with Windows and macOS, WSL gives Ubuntu access to a much larger audience. Millions of Windows users can now install and use Ubuntu without leaving the Windows ecosystem. That makes Ubuntu more accessible to developers who may never have installed Linux as their primary desktop operating system.

This also highlights a changing definition of what it means to be an Ubuntu user. In the past, Ubuntu usage usually meant installing the operating system directly on a desktop or laptop. Today, many users interact with Ubuntu through virtualized, containerized, or subsystem-based environments. For developers, the end result matters more than the installation method: they need reliable access to Linux tools, and WSL provides that inside Windows.

If Canonical’s prediction proves accurate, Ubuntu on WSL could become the most common way people use Ubuntu on desktop-class machines. That would mark an important shift in the Linux ecosystem, showing that Linux adoption is not only happening through traditional desktop installations but also through integration with Windows.

For everyday users, this may not change much immediately. But for developers, IT teams, and businesses, it reinforces a clear trend: Windows and Linux are becoming increasingly connected. Rather than forcing users to choose one platform over the other, tools like WSL allow both environments to work side by side.

Ubuntu’s future on the desktop may therefore look very different from its past. Native Ubuntu installations will remain important for Linux enthusiasts, privacy-focused users, and those who want a full open-source operating system experience. But for a growing number of professionals, Ubuntu inside Windows may be the fastest and most convenient way to get Linux where they need it most.
