TSMC, the leading semiconductor manufacturer, has unveiled promising details about its cutting-edge 2nm technology, specifically highlighting significant improvements in both performance and power efficiency. This advanced 2nm process, poised to revolutionize the industry, is projected to enter mass production in the latter half of 2025. The anticipation is palpable, especially following TSMC’s detailed presentation at the IEEE International Electron Device Meeting in San Francisco, where their innovative 2nm “nanosheets” stole the show.
According to TSMC, their 2nm process showcases a remarkable 15% boost in performance while reducing power consumption by up to 30%. Such efficiency is attributed to the enhanced transistor density, which has increased 1.15 times over prior generations thanks to the adoption of Gate-All-Around (GAA) nanosheet transistors and the N2 NanoFlex technique. This revolutionary approach optimizes the performance of the node by enabling the compact integration of diverse logic cells.
The transition from the traditional FinFET technology to the sophisticated N2 “nanosheet” systems gives TSMC unprecedented control over the current flow. Unlike FinFETs, the nanosheets use a stack of narrow silicon ribbons, each encompassed by a gate, enhancing precision control and further fine-tuning for various applications.
When compared to the 3nm technology and its variants, TSMC’s 2nm promises a noticeable advancement in capabilities. However, this cutting-edge progress comes with a cost. The price for N2 wafers is estimated to soar by over 10% from 3nm, reaching approximately $25,000 to $30,000 per wafer.
