Truecaller has expanded its services beyond mobile by introducing a desktop client, specifically designed to bring the convenience of its caller ID service and other features to PC and Mac users. As of now, Truecaller for Web is exclusively available to Android users in India and is expected to extend to other regions in the future.
The web version provides a seamless link between users’ smartphones and computers using a QR code system similar to those used by popular messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram. Truecaller for Web allows a range of functionalities, from SMS and chat mirroring to call notifications and phone number lookup, all accessible from a larger screen.
For added security, Truecaller permits only one active web session at a time and logs users out after a 30-day period of inactivity. However, users retain the option to disconnect their browser manually through settings whenever they choose.
The web client’s introduction is somewhat overdue, especially considering that companies like Microsoft already offer cross-device SMS mirroring for Android and iPhone platforms via their Phone Link feature. Nevertheless, Truecaller’s implementation will likely be welcomed for its convenience in replying to texts, particularly for managing one-time passwords while logging into services.
One of the highlights of the web client is the ability to perform unlimited phone number lookups, removing the rate limits that apply on their standard website search feature. Additionally, real-time caller ID notifications will pop up on the user’s desktop, providing a full-circle communication experience.
Interestingly, Truecaller revealed that about 80 million individuals receive daily SMS summary notifications through its app, suggesting a large user base; however, it’s unclear if all these recipients use Truecaller as their main SMS platform.
Truecaller’s recent initiatives also include AI enhancements. The “Max” feature, which blocks calls from unapproved or AI-detected spam contacts, and AI-powered call recording and transcription features are part of their technological evolution, first unveiled in the US before reaching the Indian market.
Financially, the company faced some hurdles with a significant drop in their stocks by 32% in October 2023. Since then, the company’s shares have bounced back, with the stock prices improving from a low to a more stable trading position.
Truecaller’s commitment to innovation and user experience enhancement is evident in its latest addition of the web client. As the company navigates the financial markets, it continues to advance its services, focusing on the melding of mobile and desktop platforms to facilitate communication for its extensive user base in India and beyond.
