HBM Market To Witness Price Surge Up To 10% By 2025 As Demand Set To Double Next Year 1

Tongfu Microelectronics Begins HBM2 Production Trials, Potentially Powering Huawei’s AI Chip Innovations

Chinese memory manufacturers are making significant strides in the High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) sector, as another company has announced the trial production of the HBM2 process. This development is a clear indication that China is quickly advancing in this technology. As the nation prioritizes artificial intelligence (AI) development, seeing it as crucial for national security, it is ramping up its efforts despite international challenges. The sanctions imposed by the Biden administration appear to have spurred Chinese companies to innovate and create their own AI solutions, with Huawei leading as a notable example of resilience against geopolitical pressures.

According to a report, Tongfu Microelectronics, a major player in China’s semiconductor industry, has commenced trial production of HBM2, marking a significant milestone for the domestic market. Tongfu is not alone in this venture; other Chinese companies like CXMT and Wuhan Xinxin have also made notable advancements in the DRAM and HBM sectors in recent months.

Although you may not have heard of Tongfu Microelectronics before, the company is well-known in certain circles due to its partnership with AMD, with the latter being a shareholder. Tongfu is also recognized as the third-largest semiconductor packaging and test service provider globally. Their venture into HBM technology is relatively new, and they are likely sourcing memory and semiconductor parts from third-party vendors, while using their own skills to assemble the HBM2 die.

Tongfu is reportedly supplying components for Huawei’s AI processors, though it remains unclear if their HBM modules have been officially integrated yet. Although HBM2 is two generations behind the cutting-edge HBM4 that global leaders are focusing on, it represents a significant leap for China. Despite the sanctions aimed at curbing its technological progress, China is rapidly advancing, indicating that it may soon compete with global industry standards. The rapid development seen, as exemplified by the recent DeepSeek AI incident, underscores China’s determination and progress in this arena.
