In an effort to engage younger users amid declining activity, Tinder has introduced an innovative Double Date feature. This fresh addition allows users to pair up with friends to explore potential matches together, aiming to create a more relaxed and enjoyable dating experience.
With Double Date, you can team up with a friend and browse profiles of other duos who share at least one of your preferences, such as gender or sexual orientation. Once a match is made, a group chat is initiated for all four individuals. If anyone prefers a more personal interaction, they can choose to like an individual profile and chat one-on-one. Users can invite up to three friends to join in this exciting experience.
By promoting the idea of dating with a buddy, Tinder is addressing the common pressures and anxieties of solo dating, offering a more comfortable environment for all involved.
According to Cleo Long, head of product marketing, early tests showed users feeling more at ease and authentic when connecting in pairs, leading to stronger engagement. The group chat helps break the ice and facilitates planning casual meetups, which could turn into friendships, romances, or something in between.
This new feature comes on the heels of Tinder’s parent company, Match Group, reporting a 5% drop in paying subscribers. Double Date is a strategic move to win back users while attracting new ones. Early results are encouraging, with nearly 12% of those accepting Double Date invites being either new or returning participants.
Internal data highlights that users in Double Date chats send 25% more messages than in typical one-on-one conversations, with message volumes 35% higher, especially among those under 29.
Initially tested in regions like parts of Latin America, Spain, and the Nordics, Double Date is slated for a global launch in July.
Group-focused dating is gaining traction, with apps like Fourplay, DuoDate, and Doubble making waves. A report from a UK-based dating app found that 48% of Gen Z believe double dates can reduce dating anxiety.
Alongside Double Date, Tinder offers features like Matchmaker and Share My Date, aiming to make dating a collaborative experience. Long mentions that nearly half of singles seek advice from friends when dating, reflecting a trend towards team-based approaches.
This feature builds on past concepts like Tinder Social, focusing more on creating a comfortable dating atmosphere rather than just a social event.
