In an exciting development, Meta’s social network, Threads, has unveiled a new “media” tab to revolutionize photo and video sharing. This feature, launched just after its competitors like X and Bluesky introduced similar video enhancements, allows users to effortlessly view all the shared media content in one place. According to Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, this community-driven enhancement was much anticipated and is now ready to improve user experience.
The introduction of the media tab is a strategic move by Meta to stay competitive, especially against video-centric platforms such as TikTok, which remains on watch in the U.S. despite a temporary halt on its ban. In tandem with this advancement, Threads is also rolling out global features, including a new “markup” tool to let users easily comment and add their perspectives on others’ posts. Another fresh feature is image tagging, allowing users to identify people in their shared photos directly on Threads.
This push for innovation comes as Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared impressive growth statistics, with Threads reaching 320 million monthly active users, a significant rise from 300 million just the previous month. This growth stands out when compared to rivals like Bluesky, which saw a dramatic slowdown in their expansion, growing less than 10% in month-over-month figures by December 2024, after a notable spike in November.
In its quest for greater user engagement, Meta has been steadily introducing catchy new features to Threads. These include a post scheduler, integration to follow profiles from other fediverse servers, bespoke feeds, and AI-derived summaries for trending topics. All these enhancements contribute to making Threads an appealing option for users seeking a vibrant and feature-rich social networking experience.
