Threads Challenges Bluesky with Enhanced Search Features

Meta is stepping up its game by enhancing Instagram Threads with a revamped search interface, making it a stronger contender in the social media arena. This app, which positions itself as a Meta-run alternative to Elon Musk’s platform, is based on Instagram’s vast network and is introducing a feature that allows users to search for specific posts more effectively. Users can now filter searches by user profiles and date ranges, providing a more intuitive way to find what they’re looking for.

While this new search functionality doesn’t quite match the depth of X’s advanced search—which offers a plethora of filters, including language, keywords, and hashtags—it does align Threads more closely with the search capabilities of another rival, Bluesky. Bluesky’s search features also allow users to refine their searches by profiles and date, although some advanced query options are not yet accessible through its interface.

Previously, the search feature on Threads was quite limited. Users could only sort their keyword searches by either “Top” posts, based on engagement, or “Recent” posts, based on the latest uploads. The new enhancements mark a significant upgrade, making it easier for users to navigate and locate relevant content.

This improved search option is set to roll out globally in the coming weeks, as confirmed by a recent announcement from the Threads team.

Meta’s recent flurry of updates seems to be part of a strategy to counteract the growing influence of the social networking startup, Bluesky. In September, Bluesky boasted over 9 million users, a number that has dramatically leapt to nearly 24 million in the wake of the U.S. elections. This surge was fueled by a user exodus from X, prompted by discontent with Elon Musk’s political stances and policy shifts, including proposed changes to blocking mechanisms and the use of user data for AI training.

In response, Meta’s Threads has been rolling out new tools to maintain its edge, such as allowing users to set their default feeds, introducing a seamless design for navigating multiple feeds, and refining its algorithm. Additionally, it’s working on features akin to Bluesky’s user-curated recommendation lists, termed Starter Packs, that could further elevate user engagement and customization.

With these ongoing enhancements, Meta is clearly aiming to solidify Threads’ position in the competitive social media landscape.
