Flight Scanner Turns Pixel Watch and Wear OS Watches Into a Live Plane Tracker
Pixel Watch owners and other Wear OS users now have a new way to see what is flying overhead without pulling out a phone. A new app called Flight Scanner turns compatible smartwatches into a live aircraft radar, showing nearby planes and key flight details directly on the wrist.
Wear OS watches are already useful for fitness tracking, calls, navigation, mobile payments, notifications, and quick app access. Flight Scanner adds something more unusual: real-time flight tracking for aviation fans, plane spotters, frequent travelers, and anyone curious about the aircraft passing above them.
The app was created by developer Alex Davenport, who originally built a similar experience for Garmin smartwatches. The idea came from a simple frustration: seeing or hearing an interesting aircraft and having to grab a phone to identify it. With Flight Scanner on Wear OS, that information is available with a quick glance at your watch.
Flight Scanner uses your current GPS location to create a radar-style view of the sky around you. Nearby aircraft appear on the display in real time, using data from Airplanes.live. When you tap on a plane, the app can show useful details such as the callsign, aircraft type, altitude, speed, registration, squawk code, and direction of travel.
The app also includes several tools designed to make aircraft tracking easier on a small smartwatch screen. Users can zoom and pan around the radar view, search for a specific aircraft by callsign, pin certain planes for easier tracking, and apply filters. For example, you can focus on helicopters or military aircraft, while hiding landed aircraft or smaller planes that may clutter the display.
Battery life is also part of the design. Instead of keeping the radar active constantly, Flight Scanner uses smartwatch-friendly sleep behavior to reduce unnecessary power drain. That should make it more practical for everyday use on devices like the Pixel Watch and other Wear OS models.
More features are already in development. Airport lookup and runway views are expected to arrive in future updates. Departure and destination details also appear to be in the works, pending the app update process through Google Play. A Wear OS Tile showing nearby aircraft may also be added later, giving users an even faster way to check what is flying overhead.
Flight Scanner is available through Google Play as a paid app with a one-time price of $2.99, though pricing may vary by region. Some Pixel Watch users may see compatibility warnings when opening the app listing from a phone, but searching for Flight Scanner directly from the Play Store on the watch may allow installation.
For anyone who loves aviation or simply wants to identify the planes passing above, Flight Scanner gives Wear OS watches a clever new purpose. It brings live flight tracking to the wrist in a compact, convenient format, making the Pixel Watch feel a little more like a personal aircraft radar.
