Nintendo is bringing two of its most beloved Wii adventures to modern hardware. During its September 12 Direct, the company confirmed that Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 are launching on both Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Switch 2 with sharper visuals, quality-of-life upgrades, and flexible buying options.
Both games arrive on October 2 and can be purchased individually for $39.99 each or together in a bundle for $69.99. On the technical side, expect 1080p support on Nintendo Switch and 4K output on Switch 2, giving these gravity-defying platformers a crisp, modern look. Nintendo is also adding an improved UI, extra storybook chapters, and a new assist mode designed to make the experience more approachable for newcomers without compromising the challenge for veterans.
For longtime fans, this is a welcome return. Super Mario Galaxy first launched in 2007, becoming a commercial and critical hit; it even won a BAFTA Award for Best Game in 2008. Its follow-up, Super Mario Galaxy 2, arrived in 2010 and received its own accolades, including a BAFTA nomination that year. While the original Galaxy did appear on Switch in 2020 as part of the limited-time Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection, that compilation was discontinued and removed from the eShop in March 2021—making this the first time in years that Switch owners can easily pick it up again. It’s also the first time Galaxy 2 is officially available on the platform.
With higher resolutions, added accessibility through assist mode, and fresh storybook content, this release offers a definitive way to experience two of the greatest 3D platformers ever made—whether you’re revisiting the cosmos or discovering it for the first time. Pre-orders are open now on Nintendo’s website and the eShop.
