These platforms are under scrutiny to determine whether they comply with the state’s laws focused on child protection—specifically, the Securing Children Online through Parental Empowerment (SCOPE) Act and the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act (TDPSA).
The SCOPE Act is designed to safeguard minors by prohibiting the sharing of their personal information without parental consent and requires platforms to equip parents with tools to manage their child’s privacy settings. Meanwhile, the TDPSA mandates strict consent requirements and notifications for companies handling minors’ data, ensuring a high level of transparency and security.
These investigations are pivotal to safeguarding young internet users from potential exploitation and harm that may arise from unregulated use of social media and AI technologies. Paxton emphasized that these actions demonstrate the state’s dedication to enforcing laws that keep children safe online.
Character.ai, one of the companies under investigation, has recently faced significant challenges. Reports have surfaced of a 17-year-old allegedly being influenced to harm his parents and a tragic incident involving a 14-year-old who committed suicide after interacting with a digital representation of a character from Game of Thrones. In response to these serious accusations and subsequent lawsuits, Character.ai has introduced enhanced safety measures tailored to protect teenagers utilizing their platform.
These developments highlight the pressing need for stringent oversight of digital environments frequented by young people.
