The Terrifier fan community is buzzing with tension following a statement by Damien Leone, the creator and director of the popular horror film series. The controversy began when David Howard Thornton, the actor who brilliantly portrays the fearsome villain Art the Clown, made headlines for his candid criticism of President Trump. Thornton took to the social media site Threads to express his views, drawing a historical parallel by stating, “I grew up around Germans that stayed silent. I learned from them what happens when one stays silent. That is why I continue to refuse to stay silent.”
This sparked a misunderstanding, as some people believed Thornton himself had shunned Trump voters from watching his movies. However, it was actually another user—depicted as a woman in a black tank top—who made that claim. Thornton simply endorsed her post with a like.
In response to the swirling controversy, Damien Leone himself addressed fans, choosing the platform X to clarify his stance. He explained, “Since Terrifier 1, our cast and crew have and still include people across the political spectrum. Our primary requirement is that they are decent human beings, regardless of political beliefs.” Leone emphasized that anyone uncomfortable with this approach is free to refrain from supporting the films. He urged fans not to let divisive rhetoric sway their appreciation of the Terrifier franchise.
Leone’s statement, however, was met with criticism, particularly from left-leaning fans who felt let down. Tattoo artist Emily Jayne voiced her disappointment, suggesting that Leone lacked the courage to support his actors, while others accused him of failing to denounce homophobia explicitly.
To clarify his position, Leone eventually aligned with Thornton’s views against Trump, making it clear that he did not support homophobic ideologies and underscoring that his message had been misconstrued.
Terrifier 3, the latest installment in this thrilling horror-slasher series, hit theaters recently and continues to captivate audiences with its gripping narrative and chilling performances. As the uproar surrounding Leone’s comments simmers down, fans and newcomers alike are encouraged to experience the unnerving world of Terrifier for themselves.
