In a bold move aimed at reshaping international trade dynamics, US President Donald Trump recently announced plans to implement tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China. The proposed 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada and a 10% increase on Chinese products have sparked widespread discussions about potential impacts on global industries. However, former TSMC Chairman Mark Liu assures that Taiwan’s semiconductor industry remains secure, with limited impact expected from these tariffs.
Speaking at the Wen-Yuan Pan Prize ceremony, Liu emphasized Taiwan’s focus on producing intermediate goods, which are less likely to suffer from these trade shifts. He also highlighted the strong symbiotic relationship Taiwan shares with the US in the semiconductor sector. Taiwan excels in manufacturing, while the US leads in design, creating a complementary dynamic that ensures America’s continued dominance in this crucial industry.
Reflecting on Taiwan’s journey, Liu shared insights about the country’s progress and challenges. He recalled the labor shortages of the 1990s but expressed confidence in Taiwan’s ability to overcome obstacles and expand its capabilities with dedicated effort.
After a distinguished career at TSMC, Liu has plans post-retirement to establish a think tank at his alma mater, UC Berkeley. His goal is to contribute to developing informed and secure US industrial policies, considering the current economic and political uncertainties.
Liu’s achievements were celebrated at the Wen-Yuan Pan Prize ceremony, where he received the foundation’s highest honor.
