Stellar Blade’s Official Account Compromised in Days-Long Crypto Scam Targeting Gamers

Fans of the popular game Stellar Blade, available on PC and PS5, were recently in for a surprise when they checked the game’s official social media account. Instead of game updates, they found posts promoting a dubious new cryptocurrency. This hack occurred on July 13th, when an unidentified cybercriminal took control of the account, urging followers to invest in this so-called Stellar Blade coin.

Hyung-Tae Kim, the founder of the game’s developer Shift Up, quickly reached out through an alternative account, advising fans to disregard these fraudulent posts. Interestingly, he also requested that fans avoid reporting the scam content, as it might lead to the permanent suspension of the account.

As of July 14th, the developer still hadn’t regained access, though the misleading posts have been removed. Kim assured fans that an official update would be released once the account is secure.

A Reddit user shared an example of the scam posts, which promised investors rare items and game upgrades. There were even claims that supporters could influence future developments for the game on both PC and PS5. While the Reddit community seemed largely skeptical, there’s a possibility that some people fell for the scam.

This isn’t an isolated incident. Similar hacks targeting well-known social media accounts are becoming more common, with past victims including Xbox’s official accounts. Even major organizations like the NBA and NASCAR have faced similar breaches, highlighting the vulnerabilities in online security measures. Unfortunately, regaining control can be a daunting task, even for prominent developers with strong industry ties.
