Starlink Expands Its Services to Botswana and Zimbabwe

Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) has recently ventured further into the African continent by securing licenses to operate in Botswana and Zimbabwe. With these developments, SpaceX’s satellite internet arm, Starlink, is slated to become fully available in both countries in the third quarter of 2024.

The move to expand service to Botswana and Zimbabwe follows the complete establishment of Starlink in other Southern African nations—Eswatini and Mozambique—and the anticipated launch in Namibia later in 2024.

Early in 2024, the use of Starlink satellite internet faced scrutiny and regulatory challenge in Botswana, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. There were significant concerns around the use of unauthorized Starlink kits, which led to some legal actions, including high-profile cases concerning illicit ownership and operation of the equipment.

However, recent events have shifted the landscape for SpaceX’s operations within the region. The President of Botswana, Mokgweetsi Masisi, engaged directly with Starlink executives during a United States visit, which resulted in a rapid processing of SpaceX’s license application. Similarly, Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa announced the partnership with IMC Communications, signaling the official selling of Starlink kits in Zimbabwe was imminent.

The SpaceX Availability map indicates that residents in Botswana and Zimbabwe can expect full operation of the Starlink service by the third quarter of 2024. Interestingly, at this time, there have been no updates regarding a launch in South Africa and Lesotho. Neighboring countries Eswatini and Mozambique are already enjoying the benefits of Starlink’s satellite internet, showcasing the company’s growing footprint in Southern Africa. These countries, including Botswana and Zimbabwe, all share borders with South Africa, which could point to potential regional connectivity strategies.

As Starlink progressively establishes its satellite internet service in various parts of the world, customers in Botswana and Zimbabwe can anticipate reliable and high-speed internet access previously believed out of reach. This expansion not only signifies technological advancement for these nations but also marks a pivotal step towards improved communication, education, and business opportunities facilitated by enhanced internet connectivity.

Residents interested in the service can stay informed about the latest developments as they anticipate the arrival of Starlink, set to revolutionize the internet connectivity landscape across Southern Africa.
