Spotting the Fakes: Technician Unmasks Modded RTX 3090 and 3080s as Counterfeit RTX 4090 GPUs

A recent scam highlights a growing issue in the world of high-end graphics cards. A user ended up purchasing what were believed to be RTX 4090 GPUs, only to discover that they were cleverly disguised RTX 30 series cards. A well-known YouTuber and technician revealed the deceptive modifications, exposing a scam involving not one, but three counterfeit RTX 4090s.

The fraud involved altering RTX 3090 and RTX 3080 GPUs to resemble the latest NVIDIA flagship cards. This type of bait-and-switch is becoming more common, and unsuspecting buyers can easily fall victim. The technician detailed these findings in a video, helping others identify potential fakes.

Detecting these fake cards can be challenging for the average consumer. However, subtle differences give them away. One tell-tale sign was a protruding capacitor typical of the RTX 30 series on one of the counterfeit 4090s, along with a misplaced QR code. Another fake was equipped with faux VRAM, and one was even assembled so poorly that its frame wasn’t secure.

Despite the deceptive appearance, the technician noted that even the engravings on the GPU dies, marked “AD102,” could be manipulated using laser technology to mimic genuine parts.

Amidst the fakes, one of the GPUs was real but non-functional due to issues with memory chips and capacitors. Fortunately, the technician could repair it, saving at least a part of the investment.

Sadly, the user had spent 10,000 Yen (around $1,400) on each of these counterfeit cards from an overseas seller. He chose not to repair the fakes, instead opting to return them, hoping to recover his investment.

This incident serves as a cautionary tale for those looking to purchase high-end GPUs from non-reputable sources and underscores the importance of buyer vigilance in the tech market.
