Netflix’s venture into the gaming world seems to have hit a snag with the closure of its Southern California game studio, a move that surprised many industry watchers. Dubbed ‘Team Blue’, this studio was poised to make Netflix a significant player in the big-budget AAA game market. However, plans were abruptly halted with the studio’s closure.
The studio had impressive talent at the helm, including former Overwatch executive producer Chacko Sonny, celebrated Halo and Destiny creative director Joe Staten, and Rafael Grassetti, a notable studio art director from Sony Santa Monica. Despite the allure of such heavyweights, the project was not meant to be.
Changes within Netflix’s gaming leadership were also seen, with Alain Tascan stepping in as the new president of the gaming division. Previously the VP of game development at Epic Games, Tascan takes over from Mike Verdu, who has since transitioned into a new role within Netflix. Unfortunately, under Tascan’s leadership, cost-cutting measures led to layoffs, affecting fewer than 35 employees.
While the closure of the Southern California studio signals a setback, Netflix continues to show determination in the gaming arena by focusing on mobile games tied to its hit series. Titles like “Too Hot To Handle” and “Squid Game” embody Netflix’s sustained effort to combine their popular media properties with interactive entertainment. This strategic pivot keeps them in the gaming game, suggesting Netflix’s commitment to gaming innovation is far from over.
