Sony WH-1000XM6 and WH-1000X The ColleXion Get Low-Latency Gaming Mode in New Firmware Update
Sony has rolled out a major firmware update for two of its premium wireless headphones, adding a new gaming-focused feature designed to make audio feel faster and more responsive.
The latest update is now available for the Sony WH-1000XM6 and the WH-1000X The ColleXion. For the WH-1000XM6, the firmware moves to version 3.1.5, while the WH-1000X The ColleXion receives version 1.3.0. Users can install the update through the Sony Sound Connect app by opening the headphone settings and starting the firmware update process.
The biggest addition is support for the Bluetooth LE Audio Gaming Audio Profile, also known as GMAP. This new gaming mode is built to reduce audio delay, which is especially important when playing games, watching fast-paced video, or using apps where sound and visuals need to stay closely synchronized.
With GMAP support, Sony’s headphones are designed to deliver total audio latency of under 40 milliseconds. The standard targets around 30 milliseconds for wireless audio transmission and roughly 10 milliseconds for sound processing inside the headphones. For gamers, this can make a noticeable difference, helping footsteps, dialogue, shots, effects, and on-screen action feel more immediate.
Another important part of the standard is left and right channel synchronization. GMAP requires the delay difference between both channels to stay within strict limits, helping preserve accurate stereo positioning. That matters in games where directional audio can help players detect where sounds are coming from.
The Gaming Audio Profile includes four different signal options, labeled Profile A through Profile D. Profile A focuses on achieving the lowest possible latency, potentially below 30 milliseconds. Profile D is designed for more challenging wireless environments where interference may be a problem, prioritizing a more stable connection over maximum speed.
One of the key advantages of GMAP is that it is part of the Bluetooth specification rather than a brand-exclusive gaming mode. That means it can work across compatible devices from different manufacturers, as long as both the headphones and the audio source support the same standard.
However, this also means the new low-latency gaming mode will not automatically work with every phone, tablet, laptop, handheld console, or gaming device. To take full advantage of the feature, users need a compatible source device with Bluetooth LE Audio and GMAP support.
For owners of the Sony WH-1000XM6 and WH-1000X The ColleXion, this update makes the headphones more versatile. They were already positioned as premium noise-canceling models for music, travel, and everyday listening, but the addition of a gaming mode gives them a stronger appeal for users who also want better performance during mobile gaming and other latency-sensitive entertainment.
If you own either model, it is worth checking the Sony Sound Connect app to see whether the new firmware is available for your headphones. Once installed, the update brings Sony’s flagship wireless audio lineup one step closer to delivering a smoother, more responsive gaming experience.
